Title: PLANTING THE APRON

1
PLANTING THE APRON
  • We used emerald zoyzia for the apron around our
    green.
  • This grass forms such a dense sod that fairway
grasses cannot easily mix with our green turf.
  • Zoyzia is also a non-aggressive grass that moves
slowly and should stay out of the green surface.

SPRIGGING THE TURF
  • We selected TifEagle for our Number 2 green
    (Green Number 1 is TifDwarf).
  • This turf sells for 9 a bushel as compared to 2
    for TifDwarf.
  • We use the low rate of 40 bushels because of the
    cost factor.
  • Eagle is very high maintenance as compared to
    Dwarf.

16
Sprigs must be hand spread evenly over a level
green.

Keep It Moist
  • We used a greenhouse mist timer to keep the
    sprigs moist at all times.
  • It was set to water every 20 minutes, for about 3
    minutes.
  • We continued this for about 10 days.
  • We then converted to our timer for fewer
    waterings, but extended time periods.

24
The timer had to be surrounded by block to shield
the wind.
25
A roller was used often to keep the green level
while it grew.
