Title: CAG High School Community Service Program

1
CAG High School Community Service Program
  • 2008-2009

2
CAG Mission Statement
  • Our mission is to educate independent,
    critical-thinking, responsible, bilingual
individuals prepared to meet the changes of the
    future.

3
Benefits of Student Participation in Community
Service
  • Psychological Benefits
  • Overall, sources indicate that students have
shown increases in positive feelings and mental
health, and decreases in depression and stress.

4
Social Benefits
  • Students forge bonds with each other, as well as
other members of the community. These bonds
enhance their interpersonal skills and increase
    their social network.
  • Volunteerism can lead to increased care for
others and a desire to cooperate and get involved
in positive ways, even among those who had
    previously exhibited antisocial tendencies (Smith
    1999).
  • Many students have reported an increased sense of
social responsibility, and a subsequent desire to
"give back" to the communities from which they
    have come.

5
Cognitive Benefits
  • With each new experience, old skills are
developed as new ones are learned.
  • Lessons learned from volunteering frequently
support and enrich understandings of how the
community is set u to function.
  • Dian Hedin (1989) says that "One of the best
supported findings of research about community
service is that students learn most (knowledge
about the people for whom they volunteer,
attitudes about being responsible, and being
active citizens, and problem solving skills) when
they are in programs that have regular
opportunities to process and talk about their
    direct experiences."

6
Guidelines for the Program
  • Beginning 2008-09 school year, all grade 9, 10,
and 11 students will need to complete a minimum
of 30 documented hours of Community Service in
order to be promoted to the next grade.
  • Students must complete a Proposal Form to have
their service approved before the activity
begins. For students looking to participate in
community service over the summer holidays need
to get approval from the HS Principal
  • Upon completion of each service project, the
student must complete an experience form, which
would include the submission of photos, written
reflection, journal etc. The organization must
also complete a Community Service Evaluation Form
or send a written statement on the organizations
letterhead that documents the kind and quality of
service rendered and number of hours volunteered.

7
  • In the case of a single activity/project
(short-term) that is clearly a worthy community
    service endeavor (e.g. Charity run/walk/cycle),
it is the students responsibility to provide
verification to his/her Advisor via a written
    statement on the organizations letterhead.
  • Those hours that exceed the 30 hour minimum will
be noted on a students official transcript.
However, additional hours are not applied towards
    the next school year.
  • Parent approval is required for each placement.
  • Regular attendance at your assignment is
required. If for some reason you cannot attend,
you need to notify the agency in advance.
  • CAG welcomes new community service projects and
clubs. These will compliment the listings we
already have and expand the choices available to
    the student body.
