Title: The Wrath of God

1
The Wrath of God
  • Romans 118-32 Revelation 2010-15

2
What is Gods wrath?
  • The Bible has much more to say about Gods wrath
    than His love.
  • Gods wrath means in a nutshell that He intensely
    hates all sin.
  • Gods wrath is the Bible is never the capricious,
    self-indulgent, irritable, or morally corrupt
thing that human anger can be.
  • OT (20 words 600 passages) - Nahum 12-8 (pg.
    993), Psalm 25-9 (pg. 568), Amos 518-24 (pg.
    975)

3
What is Gods Wrath?
  • In the New Testament two Greek words
  • Thymos - a panting rage
  • Orge - denotes wrath that has been slowly
building over a long period of time.
  • We live in a day of Gods grace, but that doesnt
mean that God has ceased being wrathful toward
sin or that He wont show forth wrath on the Day
    of Judgment.
  • God is so good He cant let evil go unaddressed.
  • Hebrews 1028-31 (pg. 1283)

4
Gods wrath is revealed against willful human
rebellion
  • Romans 118 - For the wrath of God is revealed
from heaven against all ungodliness and
unrighteousness of men, who by their
    unrighteousness suppress the truth.
  • Is revealed present tense the wrath of God
is the ongoing display of His justice in history.
  • Revealed against all ungodliness
    andunrighteousness.

5
Gods wrath is revealed against willful human
rebellion
  • Transgression speaks to the heart of the wicked
deep in his heart there is no fear of God before
his eyes. For he flatters himself in his own
eyes that his iniquity cannot be found out and
hated. The words of his mouth are trouble and
deceit he has ceased to act wisely and do good.
He plots trouble while on his bed he sets
himself in a way that is not good he does not
    reject evil, (Psalm 361-4, ESV).

6
Gods wrath is revealed against willful human
rebellion
  • Gods wrath isnt directed against ungodliness
    and unrighteousness, but against the
ungodliness and unrighteousness, who by their
    unrighteousness suppress the truth.
  • What truth? - What can be known about God
  • How? - Verse 20 For his invisible attributes,
namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have
been clearly perceived, ever since the creation
of the world, in the things that have been made.
    So they are without excuse.

7
Gods wrath is revealed against willful human
rebellion
  • Psalm 191 The heavens declare the glory of
God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
  • Seraphim in Isaiahs vision said that the whole
earth is full of his glory, (Isaiah 63).
  • General revelation made to everybody,
everywhere. Not special revelation made to
particular people in particular places through
    Christ and the biblical authors.

8
Gods wrath is revealed through future judgement
  • 1 Thessalonians 110 says that Jesus will deliver
us from the wrath to come.
  • Paul warns, But because of your hard and
impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for
yourself on the day of wrath when Gods righteous
judgment is revealed, (Romans 25, ESV).
  • Paul also writes, He will render to each one
according to his works to those who by patience
in well-doing seek for glory and honor and
immortality, he will give eternal life but for
those who are self-seeking and do not obey the
truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be
wrath and fury, (Romans 26-8, ESV).
  • Revelation 2010-15 (pg. 1326).

9
Gods wrath is revealed in present consequences
(Romans 121-32)
  • Three times Paul writes God gave them up.
    (v.24, 26, 28). We see a pattern
  • In the rest of the chapter Paul asserts the
    peoples knowledge of God.
  • Then Paul draws attention to their rejection of
their knowledge in favor of idolatry.
  • Finally he describes the reaction of Gods wrath
    he gave them over.

10
Conclusion How can we avoid this?
  • 2 Peter 39 The Lord is not slow to fulfill
his promise as some count slowness, but is
patient toward you, not wishing that any should
perish, but that all should reach repentance.
  • Romans 56-9 For while we were still weak, at
the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For
one will scarcely die for a righteous person
though perhaps for a good person one would dare
even to die but God shows his love for us in
that while we were still sinners, Christ died for
us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified
by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him
    from the wrath of God.
