  • Most people take their teeth for granted. They
assume their teeth will last as long as they do,
and if there's a problem, a dentist can always
fix it. But unless teeth are cared for properly,
problems may arise and lead to permanent damage
and eventually cause loss of teeth. And even with
alternatives to natural teeth available, they're
never as good as one's own.

To explain some important things about your
teeth. In your lifetime you will only have two
set of teeth.
  • Tooth Growth DevelopmentWhat's the difference
between "baby" teeth and permanent teeth? At
between six and ten months of age, most infants
    begin to get theirbaby" teeth.
  • By the time a child has reached three yearsold,
most of the "baby" teeth should be present.
  • The process begins torepeat itself when the
child is about seven years old. The
CentralIncisors fall out first and are replaced
by permanent teeth. By the ageof 21, most people
have all of their permanent teeth.

7
  • Primary teeth, or baby-teeth
  • are important for
  • (1) proper chewing and eating,
  • (2) providing space for the permanent teeth and
guiding them into the correct position, and
  • (3) permitting normal development of the jaw
    bones and muscles.
  • Primary teeth also affect the development of
speech and add to an attractive appearance.
  • While the front 4 teeth last until 6-7 years of
age, the back teeth (cupids and molars) arent
    replaced until age 10-13.

8
  • The Permanent Teeth is comprised of
  • 32 teeth in 2 dental arches
  • 12 incisor teeth...The Front Teeth
  •   8 Bicuspid Teeth...The Premolars
  • 12 Posterior or Molar Teeth...The Back Teeth

What are the parts of a tooth?
  • A tooth is basically made up of two parts
  • the crown
  • the root.
  • The crown is what you see when you smile or open
    you mouth.
  • Its the part that sits above your gum line.
  • The root is below the gum line.
  • It makes up about 2/3rds of the tooths total
    length

11
Of course you can study The tooth in detail. But
for now the part we are concern about in
the taking care of the teeth Avoiding
cavities And understanding the basic which is
the Crown And the Root.
12
Tooth decay is the single most common chronic
childhood disease 5 times more common than
asthma and 7 times more common than hay fever
13
Cavities
  • What are cavities? How do they occur? Cavities
are a destruction of the tooth enamel. They occur
when foods containing carbohydrates (sugars and
starches) such as milk, pop, raisins, cakes or
candy are frequently left on the teeth. Bacteria
that live in the mouth thrive on these foods,
producing acids as a result. Over a period of
time, these acids destroy tooth enamel, resulting
    in cavities.

Dental Fact did you know that the enamel on
your teeth is the hardestsubstance in your
body?
14
So this process is also called "tooth decay."
  • Bacteria that live in the mouth thrive on these
foods, producing acids as a result. Over a period
of time, these acids destroy tooth enamel,
resulting in cavities. This process is also
    called "tooth decay."

Next lets look at Severe Decay/Healthy Mouth

Tooth Wisdom Your Teeth and How to Take Care of
Them.
  • Use the right tools, including fluoride
toothpaste to help prevent tooth decay, a
toothbrush with soft, rounded bristles and dental
    floss.

17
Brushing your teeth seems simple enough, but are
you brushing the correct way?
  • Brush morning and night, holding the toothbrush
at an angle against the gum line, and move the
brush back and forth with short strokes. Brush
the outer surfaces of each tooth, upper and
lower. Then brush the inner surfaces of each
tooth, and hold the brush flat and brush the
chewing surfaces of each tooth. Gently brush the
    tongue, too.

18
  • Floss daily to help remove plaque from between
teeth and under the gum line.

So when you go to the dentist to Get your teeth
clean, they tell What a good job you have done!

  • FLOSSING TIPS
  •   Flossing helps to remove plaque from in between
your teeth, in areas that your toothbrush cant
reach. It is not the space between the teeth you
are flossing, but the tooth surface. HOW TO FLOSS

  • Good Diet Healthy Teeth

Healthy eating habits lead to healthy teeth. Like
the rest of the body, the teeth, bones and the
soft tissues of the mouth need a well-balanced
diet. Children should eat a variety of foods
from the five major food groups
Next I will show you the USDA Food Guide
Pyramid. It is a model that shows us how to eat
foods for good health. This pyramid tells us
how much food and what kind of food we should
eat.
24
  • Most snacks that children eat can lead to cavity
formation. The more frequently a child snacks,
the greater the chance for tooth decay. How long
food remains in the mouth also plays a role. For
example, hard candy and breath mints stay in the
mouth a long time, which cause longer acid
attacks on tooth enamel. If you must snack,
choose nutritious foods such as vegetables,
low-fat yogurt, and low-fat cheese which are
healthier and better for your teeth.

25
Are Your Teeth Clean and White?(Sung to "Do
Your Ears Hang Low!")Do you brush them every
night?Do you brush them in the morning?Do you
brush them right?Do you brush them side to

26
Most people take their teeth for granted. They
assume their teeth will last as long as they do
and they should. Because you only have two sets
of teeth, with proper care starting before your
first tooth appears they might.
  • Start now taking care of your teeth to last your
    lifetime.
  • Good dental hygiene can give you a beautiful
sparkling smile for many, many years! Creating
smiles that will last a lifetime.
