General Information
  • Tobacco contains a drug called nicotine which is
    very addictive.
  • Tobacco is in cigarettes and is mixed with
    nicotine, tar and carbon monoxide.
  • In the UK 13 people die every hour because of
    smoking-related diseases.
  • Tobacco is farmed on Tobacco farms all around the
    world.
  • In 2004 738,954 kids became regular smokers.

Dangers/Risks
  • Its Very easy to get addicted. Most smokers wish
    they never started.
  • Ten cigarettes cost 500 or more a year.
  • If you smoke you risk cancer, heart disease and
    lung problems.
  • Tobacco smoke contains over 4000 chemicals, most
    of which are dangerous.
  • At least 50 of the chemicals in tobacco smoke
    cause initiate or cancer.

Effects/Causes
  • When smoke is inhaled the brain is infected in 8
    seconds, it speeds up heart rate and increases
    blood pressure.
  • Usually the first time you smoke you feel sick.
  • Long term tobacco habit leads to cancer,
    emphysema and heart disease.
  • 120,000 premature deaths in the UK each year are
    caused by tobacco.
  • When you smoke you get a feeling of relaxation
    and it helps to take your mind of problems.

Passive Smoking
  • Passive Smoking is also known as 2nd hand
    smoking.
  • Adults with asthma can have a decline in lung
    function.
  • 30 minutes of exposure is enough to reduce blood
    flow.
  • 2nd hand smoke causes at least 1,000 deaths a
    year in the UK.
  • Some immediate effects of passive smoking are
  • Eye irritation
  • Headaches
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea

The Law
  • Tobacco is legal by the law.
  • Only over 16 year olds can buy it in cigarettes
    at most stores.
  • Health warning signs have to be on all packs of
    cigarettes by law.
  • In Dublin some pubs have banned smoking
    altogether.
  • Britain is hoping to have a complete ban on
    smoking in public places.

  • About 20.
  • Have you tried to give up?
  • Yes
  • How hard is it?
  • Extremely hard.
  • What do you feel like when you smoke?
  • Relaxed and stress-free.
  • Do you think you will give up again?
  • I would like to think so as its very bad for you
    and costs a lot.

benefits of stopping smoking start almost
immediately
  • 20 minutes Blood pressure and pulse return to
    normal.
  • 8 hours Nicotine and carbon monoxide levels in
    the blood are halved, oxygen levels in the blood
    return to normal.
  • 24 hours Carbon monoxide is eliminated from the
    body and the lungs start to clear out the build
    up of tar.
  • 48 hours There is no nicotine left in the body.
    Taste and smell are greatly improved.
  • 72 hours Breathing becomes easier, bronchial
    tubes begin to relax, energy levels increase.
  • 2 - 12 weeks Circulation improves, making
    walking and running a lot easier.
  • For life- will help improve taste and smell,
    reduce stress and wont tire as quickly.
