    was independent. Its king married a Chinese
    princess, so China thought Tibet was rightfully
    theirs.

  • 1949 China invades eastern Tibet
  • 1951 The riots against he Chinese occupations
    left 87,000 Tibetans dead.
  • 1959 the Dalai Lama escapes from Lhasa
  • 1966 During the "cultural revolution" 2,692
    Tibetan monasteries were destroyed.

Why?
  • As said before in the fun fact Tibet was
    independent from China, but China thought it had
    a right to have Tibet. Tibetans being very
    peaceful people could not fight back with a lot
    of force.

Series of Events
  • When China took over Tibet had a government
    controlled by the Dalai Lama.
  • China invaded July 1949.
  • China at first tried to woo the Tibetans, but
    after China lost a large number of troops by
    guerilla movement 100,000 more Chinese troops
    were added to end the uprising.
  • Thousands of Tibetan people surrounded the home
    of the Dalai Lama around the walls. To protect it.

  • The Chinese stationed Artillery around the city,
    When Tibetans had cannons that were moved by
    donkeys.
  • The Chinese and Tibetans fought for 2 days hand
    to hand in the streets. The Tibetans horribly
    outnumbered.
  • The Chinese won the fight and shelled the city.
  • Thousands were killed and they publicly executed
    the body guards of the Dalai Lama.

Numbers
  • About 56 thousand were killed at that time. The
    whole conflict killed 2.2 million people. 1
    million from armed conflict and the rest from
    poverty and lack of food.

Tibet NOW
  • Tibet is still controlled by China, however,
    there are not mass killings going on anymore.
  • The Tibetans being Buddhist, cannot express
    religion or have pictures of the Dalai Llama or
    they will be arrested.
  • Tibetans are the Minority in Tibet.
