Title: POLLUTION

1
POLLUTION
2
  • There are many kinds of pollution (water, soil,
air and acoustic pollution) and all damage our
    world.

3
  • The one we will now examine is AIR POLLUTION,
because it has recently been one of the main
problems in our region. This is a photo taken by
Istituto di Fisica dell'Atmosfera - CNR.
  • The red circle, represents a part of Lombardia,
the place where we live, and it is covered by a
    blanket of smog.

4
  • There are natural air pollutants and man- made
air pollutants. Volcanoes are natural pollutants
because they let off a smoke- like substance
which contains carbon dioxide and sulphur. Forest
fires are also natural pollutants because the
smoke goes up into the air we breathe. Power
plants are an example of man- made pollutants.
They release harmful gases into the air. Spray
products use a type of gas (CFC) which is harmful
for the atmosphere. Using CFC-free products helps
    minimize air pollution.
  • Air pollution is mainly caused by carbon monoxide
and sulphur dioxide, caused by the burning of
coal, oil, and other natural gases. Air pollution
affects trees, plants, flowers, lakes, animals,
    buildings, and of course people.
  • Air pollution causes smog, acid rain and can
damage vegetation. It can cause minor health
problems such as soar throat and headache. It can
also cause serious health problems such as
blindness, lung cancer, and even death.

5
  • The measurement of the quality of air is useful
to protect the health of population and the
    ecosystem.
  • Emission inventory for Lombardy is based on the
INEMAR database (EMission INventory in AiR), an
archive that allows to estimate emissions to a
    municipality level for different pollutants,
    activities and fuels.

6
GROUND LEVEL OZONE PRECURSORS
ACIDIFYING
Ground level ozone precursors are NOx,NMVOC, CO
and CH4
Acidifying substances are SO2, NOx and NH3
7
  • GAS SERRA

PM10
Greenhouse gases are CO2, CH4 and N2O
8
STATISTICAL SURVEY
LODI
  • These are the results of statistical surveys made
at Codogno (near Casalpusterlengo) and Lodi.

9
POLLUTANTS
  • PM10 (particulate matter with a mass which is
less than 10 micron) they are partly produced by
anthropic or natural processes and partly formed
from other pollutants emissions (SO2, NOx, NH3).
  • SO2 it forms as a result of fossil fuels
combustion (coal and oil contain sulphur as an
impurity petrol and diesel fuel also contain
sulphur but in a lower percentage).

10
P O L L U T A N T S
  • CO (Carbon monoxide) it forms as a result of
    incomplete combustion processes
  • (domestic heating, car traffic and industrial
    processes).
  • NO2 (Nitrogen dioxide) it is a suffocating gas,
colourless and odourless produced by industrial
    plant, heating, and car exhausts.

11
POLLUTANTS
  • O3 (Ozone) it is a substance not directly
emitted into the air, but it forms later as a
result of complex chemical reactions with sun
    radiations and high temperatures.
