level
2Introduction
Medersa is an innovative experience in the field
of information technology based higher education,
conducted since may 2001 at the Faculty of
Sciences Semlalia - Marrakech.
Medersa is a network of pedagogical,
technological and human structures which work in
an integrated and homogenous manner.
3Medersa network
This network consists of a server of multimedia
pedagogical resources specially conceived for our
students, a multimedia pedagogical space, a
pedagogical and didactic platform, a multimedia
platform, a self-training and cultural activity
space.
By means of these structures, the Medersa network
is able to offer numerous pedagogical services
for tutoring, guiding and supporting students.
4The Medersa server
Apache server as a LAN with the computers at the
multimedia pedagogical space. Access to the
multimedia catalogue of the central library, to
pedagogical resources and to the internet
behaving as a cache. Internet access is
performed through a Mandrake Security gateway
dedicated to security and to URL filtering. A
second off-line server gives the clients in the
intranet, access to CD-ROMs and electronic
documentation available in the central library.
5The multimedia pedagogical space
This space was fitted out within the central
library of the faculty since March 2002. Thus
allowing us to reach a large number of students
and to offer pedagogical services that improve
documentary research quality and enrich and
diversify accessible resources. This space has
been receiving nearly 300 students everyday.
6The multimedia pedagogical space
25 computers as a LAN are available for students
to access free of charge. The operating system
adopted is Linux. Other programs like office
suite, web browsers, graphic and development
softwares were installed, in consistence with the
previously planned pedagogical use. The
students, even new comers to computers, havent
found difficulties to get used to Linux
environment.
7Biblio
http//www.ucam.ac.ma/fssm/medersa
Biblio is a home-made central library multimedia
catalogue. Biblio has been on-line since April
2002, its among the most visited sites at the
multimedia pedagogical space.
8Biblio
Books are classified by courses offered at our
faculty.
An easy and intuitive browsing allows to display
the complete list of reference works dealing with
a given course.
9Biblio
Detailed bibliographic information Book
covers Complete tables of contents
10Biblio, pedagogical choices and uses
It allows access to pedagogical resources
made-to-measure for our students. Links between
pedagogical resources and tables of contents
exploit more the power of this tool.
Training workshops to the use of Biblio and to
the documentary research on the internet are
regularly organised for students there,
supervised by either a tutor, a pedagogical
counsellor or a teacher
11Biblio, pedagogical choices and uses
No search engine, given the limited number (2500)
of titles available. A classification by courses
proved to be more suitable. Students who dont
have a direct access to books can, however,
consult tables of contents on computers in the
multimedia pedagogical space and make a relevant
choice.
12Biblio, Links and on-line journals
Medersa links to a directory of the best
educational web sites specially adapted to
Moroccan learners, classified by subject and
commented by specialists.
Medersa links also to a directory of nearly 60
on-line journals in different fields of
scientific research that offer free full text
access.
13Pedagogical and didactic platform
It consist of a set of theoretical and
methodological references allowing teachers to
develop training modules with a great pedagogical
profit, and also favouring their continuous
education in the field of active pedagogy and of
multimedia resources didactic.
14Training modules
A training module is a set of consistent and
complete multimedia resources intended for
self-learning at the multimedia pedagogical
space, with or without a tutor, or even out of
campus.

17Training modules
A module can be consulted by either learning
agreements or by types of resources. The learning
agreements succession defines the progression
proposed by the content designer, but within it,
the learner can follow his own itinerary
according to his needs and capacities. The
consultation by types of resources matches a more
specific need, for example when the learner
prepares an examination or when he wants to
further understand a concept developed in class.
18Multimedia platform
Medersa graphics were inspired from the Medersa
Ben Youssef, first university of the city, built
in the 16th century.
19Multimedia platform
The visual artistic aspect of the multimedia
platform can enhance the study of other areas of
the basic curriculum and contribute to an overall
culture of excellence in the university.

21Self-trainingand cultural activity space
Managed by a pedagogical counsellor. This space
is being fitted out with reference books,
audio-visual equipment and personal computers
connected to the Medersa server. After a
multimedia and a methodological literacy,
students are guided to adapted training modules.
22Self-trainingand cultural activity space
Students can integrate into 3 workshops at any
time within the academic year

24Pedagogical counselling
Enhances learners abilities in self-training. Full
y integrated with the Medersa network,
pedagogical counselling is necessary to guarantee
the efficiency of a free access to pedagogical
multimedia resources. Makes human and equipment
investments profitable.
25Pedagogical counselling
Pedagogical counselling leads students
to Characterize their difficulties. Define their
objectives. Establish by themselves their
learning schedule. The counsellor guides them
towards the most useful and adapted documentary
resources with procedural or tutor guidance.
26Pedagogical counselling
The counsellor has files for regular students,
and follows their activities. This way, both the
student and the counsellor can estimate the
progress in learning to learn based on a previous
agreement. If students are motivated by
auto-directed learning and plan to devote more
time for it to move further, the counsellor
usually guides them to one of the training
workshops mentioned above and encourages them to
take part in some cultural activities.
27Impact on learners and teachers
Students intensively used these new pedagogical
structures and services. A considerable change of
the students attitude towards information
technology. Students improved their abilities to
find information, particularly those who followed
workshops. The modernism and efficiency of the
changes that have been taking place in the
central library has enhanced the student
motivation.
28Impact on learners and teachers
Consultation of modules at the multimedia
pedagogical space stimulated the evolution of the
pedagogical practices of some teachers towards
more active methods. The dynamics of pedagogical
multimedia resources conception has started
taking shape at our faculty, now that the
necessary tools and structures are available.
29Conclusion
Medersa is a pedagogical platform for
self-training resources, based on pedagogical,
technical and human structures. The presence of
pedagogical management is highly recommended to
make the investment profitable. Thus, ICT are
improving education quality and forming human
resources.
30Conclusion
For the Medersa network, internet access is
accompanied by a rigorous pedagogical
management Pedagogical agreements clarify the
rules of use, a weighed control to internet
access by filtering URLs, a continuous technical
support, training workshops to multimedia and
documentary research, etc.
