What is a Logic Model?
  • A logic model is a graphic representation of a
    programs theory of change
  • It describes and sequentially links specific
conditions with defined program activities to
    achieve intended outcomes

3
Benefits of the Logic Model
  • Creates shared understanding
  • Increases uniformity of implementation
  • Acts as a road-map for an evaluator
  • Provides the basis for generating
    hypothesis-driven research

4
Logic Model Overview
5
Reading the PAT Logic Model
  • Basic Elements
  • Vision/Mission
  • Core Values
  • Assumptions
  • PAT Model Components
  • Activities
  • Outcomes Short-term, Intermediate, and
    Long-term
  • Logic Model read from left to right
  • Suggests change over time

6
Core Values
  • Most basic beliefs that are the foundation of the
    PAT model program
  • Flow from the programs vision and mission
  • Define PATs target population as young children
    and their families

7
Assumptions
  • Key principles of high quality programming as
they relate to the needs of children and families
  • Statements about context and conditions
  • Provide the rationale for the PAT model components

8
Model Components
  • Summarize the PAT services that directly support
    children and families
  • Flow directly from a set of assumptions
  • Describe strategies

9
Activities
  • Specific statements of program services provided
    as part of the model
  • Guides implementation
  • Fully implementing activities will lead to
    desired outcomes

10
Short-term Outcomes
  • Are anticipated consequences that result directly
    from program services
  • May be changes in attitudes, behaviors,
knowledge, and skills on an individual level
  • Help focus resources and staff effort on
    specific, realistic goals

11
Intermediate Outcomes
  • Due to program implementation indirectly or
    building upon short-term outcomes
  • Are measurable at a later time point

12
Long-term Outcomes
  • Require greater time to measure
  • May be difficult or expensive to measure

13
Path from Activities to Outcomes
14
PAT Goals
  • All outcomes correspond to one of the four PAT
    goals.

15
Achieving Program Goals
  • Goals are met throughout implementation
  • The PAT goals describe the impacts of the program
  • Impacts are community wide changes

16
Linkages
  • Are represented by arrows
  • Show which activity contributes to an outcome
  • Are often complex
  • Any activity can result in multiple outcomes
  • Any outcome can result from multiple activities

17
PAT Logic Model and the PAT Model Program
  • The PAT Logic Model reflects the PAT model
  • To fit local programs, the logic model may
    require minor adaptation
  • Logic models may include other elements

18
Uses of PAT Logic Model
  • Provide a guide to implementation
  • Assist in planning, staff training, and resource
    allocation
  • Assist in design of evaluation plans

19
Use the PAT Logic Model
  • To develop a shared understanding with key
stakeholders and show how Parents as Teachers
makes a difference in the lives of young children
and their families to accomplish our vision that
  • All children will learn, grow and develop to
    realize their full potential
