3Mixing Colored Pigments
The mixing of paints and dyes is an entirely
different process from mixing colored
light. Pigment a material that selectively
absorbs colored light.
4Mixing Colored Pigments
This is called color mixing by subtraction.
5Mixing Colored Pigments
Subtractive Primary Colors The colors that are
most useful in color mixing by subtraction.
Magenta, yellow and cyan.
6Scattering
Violet light is scattered the most, followed by
blue, green, yellow, orange, and red, in that
order. The tinier the particle, the higher the
frequency of light it will scatter.
7Why the Sky Is Blue
The sky is blue because its tiny particles
scatter high-frequency light. Although violet
light is scattered more than blue, our eyes are
more sensitive to blue, so we see a blue sky.
8Why Sunsets Are Red
At sunset, the light has to go through more
atmosphere than at noon. Red light can pass
through more atmosphere without scattering than
blue light.
9Why Water Is Greenish Blue
Water somewhat absorbs visible-red
frequencies. What happens to white light when red
is taken away?
