Title: Pure Substance vs' Mixtures

1
Pure Substance vs. Mixtures
  • The saga continues.

2
Atoms Compounds Molecules
  • Sodium (Na)- solid
  • Chlorine (Cl)- poison gas
  • NaCl (table salt)
  • Atoms the smallest parts of matter, which can
    come together to form new
  • Compounds- 2 or more atoms chemically combined to
    form a new substance.
  • Molecules- act as units

3
Pure Substance
  • Matter with a fixed composition (it never
    varies), and has definite properties.
  • WATER H20
  • It always has 2 hydrogen 1 oxygen.

4
Pure Substances cont.
  • Salt NaCl always has 1 sodium and 1
    chlorine!
  • Table Sugar (sucrose) C12H22O11

5
Mixtures
  • Combination of more than one pure substance.
  • Can be separated physically or chemically!
  • Salads, Kool-Aid, Pizza.

6
Types of Mixtures Homogeneous
  • Homogeneous means appears the same throughout.
  • Kool Aid contains water, sugar coloring, but is
not a pure substance because each of the
ingredients can vary each time it is made. It is
a homogeneous mixture because it is the same
    throughout and can be separated!
  • We say they are miscible (they dissolve
    completely).

7
Types of Mixtures Heterogeneous
  • Heterogeneous Mixture Mixtures in which
differences can be seenoil water, sand
    water, flour water.
  • We say they are immiscible (they dont dissolve
    in each other).

8
Mixture Lab
  • Design a plan (experiment) in DETAIL, which would
allow you to separate the following mixtures.
Identify which pieces of lab equipment will be
utilized, and how they will be used to achieve
    your desired results.
  • Bunsen Burner Ring Stand w/ring
  • Funnel w/plastic tubing Evaporating Dish
  • Beaker Wire Gauze
  • Erlenmeyer Flask Filter Paper
  • Mixtures
  • Oil Water Sand Water Salt Water
