Title: Instructional Decision Making
1Instructional Decision Making
Session 2 Assessment
Training for Implementation Support
2Instructional Decision Making
Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum
In the IDM process, these three components work
together and are synchronized.
Data-based Decision Making
Assessment
3Instructional Decision Making
Session 2 Objectives
Each participant will
- Know the role of assessment in Instructional
Decision Making.
2. Know the definition of each type of
assessment.
- 3. Know when and how each assessment type is
used in Instructional Decision Making.
4Instructional Decision Making
The decisions we make about instruction are only
as good as the data upon which they are based.
5Instructional Decision Making
The data obtained from the assessment of student
learning is what drives the Instructional
Decision Making process.
6Instructional Decision Making
There are three types of assessment classroom
teachers use to inform their instruction
Screening
Diagnostic
Formative
7Instructional Decision Making
Summative Assessment
8Instructional Decision Making
Screening Diagnostic Formative
Each is relevant for PreK through 12th grade.
Each is aligned with standards and benchmarks.
9Instructional Decision Making
Screening
Purpose Identifies high and low performing
students whose needs are not being met.
Questions Answered How are students responding
to core instruction? Which students are in need
of additional assessment?
10Instructional Decision Making
Screening provides data to
a. inform instruction
- b. help school staff determine if there are
systemic educational needs and
- c. guide decisions about supplemental or
intensive instruction for those students whose
needs are not being met.
11Results of Screening (40 students)
Instructional Decision Making
All these students will receive core instruction.
In addition, 7 will need supplemental instruction
and 3 will need intensive instruction.
12Instructional Decision Making
Diagnostic Assessment
Purpose Helps to determine why the academic
and/or behavioral needs are occurring.
Identifies what the student needs to learn.
Diagnostic assessment takes a deeper look.
13Diagnostic Assessment
Instructional Decision Making
Diagnostic assessment may be needed to determine
which students need supplemental instruction and
which need intensive. It is a deeper look to
determine what specific instruction is needed.
14Instructional Decision Making
Diagnostic assessment is administered to students
who exceed or fall below the learning
expectations on the screening measures. Results
are used to design instructional plans to meet
individual needs.
15Instructional Decision Making
Formative Assessment
Purpose Identifies if students are making
progress. Identifies if instruction needs
adjustment.
Questions Answered Are the students making
progress compared to self, peers, and
standard? Is an instructional change needed?

The greater the intensity of instruction The
greater the frequency of monitoring.
17Instructional Decision Making
In summary, in the Instructional Decision Making
process
the assessment of learning is
critical,
ongoing, and
used to inform instruction.

Module 2 Assessment Activity 1
- Break into groups of 4 or 5.
- Provide each group with a sample assessment
screening (blue), diagnostic (pink), or formative
(buff). - Each group should pull the page from their
notebook (Introduction) which aligns with their
sample - ScreeningPage 25 DiagnosticPage 29
- FormativePage 33
- Each group should review what components their
assessment should entail (i.e., formative
assessment is) and then answer the provided
questions. - Each group will share their sample assessment and
answers to their questions with all participants.

used by your school or district by consulting
with school personnel. 2) Compile the
Assessment Analysis. This assignment can be done
as a team. 3) Reminders Your Module 1
Assignment (standards benchmarks) will help you
complete the analysis. Results will be shared in
future trainings.
