Title: The Circulatory System

1
The Circulatory System
  • By Will Rodriguez
  • Eric McGinnis

2
Parts of the Heart
  • Left and Right Atrium
  • Left and Right Ventricle
  • Valves
  • Vessels
  • (Pulmonary Artery, Pulmonary Vein, and Aorta)
  • Superior and Inferior Vena Cava

3
Atrium And Ventricle
  • Atrium-
  • (Holding chamber for blood entering the heart,
    Produces the Lub sound.)
  • Ventricle-
  • (Pumps the blood from the heart, walls are
thicker than the atrium and have more muscles,
    produces the Dub sound.)

4
Valves Vessels
  • Valves
  • (Mitral Valves- control between left atrium and
left ventricle, Semi Lunar valves-control flow
    from ventricle to arteries.
  • Vessels
  • (Pulmonary Vein- transports blood from the right
ventricle to the lungs, Pulmonary Artery-
transports blood from the lungs to the left
atrium, Aorta- carries blood to other parts of
the body from the heart, Vena Cava- carries
deoxygenated blood back to the heart.

5
Arteries
  • Classified as one of the three types of vessels
  • Blood vessels that carry oxygen, rich blood, and
nutrients away from the heart to the body.
  • Pulmonary artery- only artery that does not carry
    oxygenated blood
  • Arterioles- smallest type of artery
  • Aorta- Largest artery

6
Pumping Action
  • The pumping action of the heart is when the heart
is pumping blood through the body to places that
need it. So a heart is like a vacuum it cleans up
the body by passing blood through the veins. When
the blood passes through your body is sends of
oxygen and nutrients to places that need them.

7
Blood Flows
  • Blood flows through a complex system of tubes
which send blood through your body. At each
tissue or organ the blood drops off oxygen and
nutrients and exchange for waste products. Blood
first pumps from your heart, once pumped it sends
of blood through blood vessels to get to each
part of your body. Blood flows through 60,000
blood vessels to get to each part of the body.
Also, the heart pumps 2,000 gallons of blood per
    day.

Heart Disease
  • Heart disease is the number one killer in Canada.
Some things may cause heart disease like
    smoking, stress, being overweight, physically
inactive, and diets rich in saturated fat. The
most common symptom is angina. Angina can be
described as a discomfort, heaviness, pressure,
aching, burning, fullness, squeezing or painful
feeling in your chest. Some treatments for heart
    disease are coronary angiography, coronary
stenting, and heart transplants. To prevent
having heart disease dont smoke, stay in shape,
and most of all eat healthy.

Vocabulary
  • Aorta-The main trunk of the systemic arteries,
carrying blood from the left side of the heart to
the arteries of all limbs and organs except the
    lungs.
  • Artery- Any of the muscular elastic tubes that
form a branching system and that carry blood away
from the heart to the cells, tissues, and organs
    of the body.
  • Arteriosclerosis- a chronic disease in which
thickening, hardening, and loss of elasticity of
the arterial walls result in impaired blood
    circulation.
  • Atrium- a chamber or cavity to which several
    chambers or passageways are connected.
  • Blood pressure- the pressure exerted by the blood
against the walls of the blood vessels,
    especially the arteries.
  • Capillary- Relating to or resembled a hair, fine
    and slender.
  • Deoxygenated blood- The functions of the heart
are to pump oxygenated blood around the body, and
to deliver deoxygenated blood and waste products
    to the lungs.

10
More Vocabulary
  • Diastole- The normal rhythmically occurring
relaxation and dilation of the heart chambers
  • Heart- The chambered muscular organ in
vertebrates that pumps blood received from the
    veins into the arteries
  • Pace maker- One who sets a pace for itself
  • Pulmonary artery- An artery that carries venous
blood from the right ventricle of the heart to
    the lungs
  • Vein- Any of the membranous tubes that form a
    branching system
  • Septum- a thin partition or membrane that divides
two cavities or soft masses of tissue in an
    organism
  • Systole- the rhythmic contraction of the heart
    especially of the ventricles
  • Valve- a membranous structure in a hollow organ
    or passage
  • Vein- any of the membranous tubes that form a
branching system and carry blood to the heart.
  • Ventricle- A small cavity or chamber within the
    body or the organ
