The Catalan Government
- As a nationality and to achieve self-government,
Catalonia was constituted as an Autonomous
Community in 1978, in accordance with the Spanish
Constitution and the Statute of Autonomy, which
is the basic institutional regulation. - The Generalitat is the institution in which the
self-government of Catalonia is organised. It
consists of the Parliament, the president of the
Generalitat and the Executive or Governing
Council.

The Catalan Language Social Council is an
advisory, consultative and social participation
body in the Catalan Government language policy To
assess the aims and results of the Catalan
Government language policy and, in particular,
the annual language policy report. To study and
analyse, as instructed by the Government, the
issues related to fostering and promoting the
Catalan language in all spheres of society. To
pronounce on the projects for language planning
instruments that have to be approved by the
Government. To propose to the Government the
drafting of studies and pronouncements and the
adoption of measures appropriate to the general
goals of the language policy law.

- Support for the Institute of Catalan Studies

- This is an academic, scientific and cultural
corporation whose purpose is advanced scientific
research, mainly into all elements of Catalan
culture. - The IEC is in charge of studies of the language,
sets standards and sees that the process of
standardisation of Catalan is coherent throughout
its sphere.

- Preparation of materials for administrative
language in general - Since the return of democracy, the Catalan
Government has encouraged the creation of
materials of all kinds to help with the use of
administrative language. - In some cases it has been possible to start from
the legacy of the administrative language of the
Kingdom of Catalonia and Aragón (15th-16th
centuries), which has been modernised and now
fully meets all the present needs of the
administration.

TERMCAT provides terminological advice for the
Catalan Parliament, to obtain the most suitable
use of terminology in the drafting of laws and
provisions. Some of the neologisms standardised
by TERMCAT respond to requests related to the
drafting of new legal provisions.

TERMCAT, through the Supervisory Council,
standardises neologisms in the administrative
sphere (loan words, new conceptual realities,
etc.) The use of this standardised terminology is
mandatory in the Catalan administration.
