Active Directory UpdaterProvidence School System
23
Background
  • Each student in the Providence School system has
their own Active Directory account and home
    directory.
  • The students home directory is stored on the
    schools file server.
  • The student account is stored in an Active
Directory Organizational Unit (OU) for the School
    the student is attending.
  • The student account belongs to certain groups
that are specific to each school.
  • The student information is maintained in a
    separate registration system.

24
Background
25
Issue
  • As students move into or out of the school
    district
  • Their account needs to be created or disabled.
  • Their home directory needs to be created or
    removed.
  • Security needs to be setup or removed on their
    home directory.
  • The account needs to be added or removed from the
    security groups.

26
Issue Cont.
  • When students moved up a grade and into a new
    school
  • Their account needs to be moved into the new
    schools OU in Active Directory.
  • Their home directory needs to be moved to the new
    schools file server.
  • Security needs to be setup on the home directory.
  • Their account needs to be removed from the old
groups and added to the groups in the new school.

27
Move the Student
28
Pain
  • It was taking hours each week to move accounts
    around.
  • It was taking a months worth of time to setup
and move the accounts during the summer recess.

29
Requirement
  • Limit the manual labor require to update the
    student information in Active Directory.
  • Provide reporting and error notification.

30
Solution
  • UNICOM developed a program to automate the
process of setting up, disabling or transferring
of student accounts and home directories.
  • The program reads changes from the registration
system and implements the changes in Active
    Directory.
  • The program automatically create new Active
    Directory structures as needed.

31
Solution
32
Benefit
  • The program saves the Providence School System
hundreds of hours of labor each year.
  • The program frees up the Providence Schools IT
staff to handle more important problems.
