Finger Bowls

• Its not a cup of soup
• It will be served either before or after the
  dessert course
• There is a slice of lemon floating in the water
• Dip your fingertips in the water (no scrubbing)
• Dry with your napkin (delicately), and set the
  bowl to the side of your plate

Utensils

• Use the outer utensils first and work your way in
• Drink to your right and eat to your left
• If your neighbor has already taken your bread
  plate or drink, quietly ask the waiter for another

Soup

• Only fill it 3/4 full to avoid spilling
• Sip, not slurp, from the edge of the spoon
• Do not insert the whole bowl of the spoon into
  your mouth
• It is proper to tip a soup bowl slightly to get
  all of the soup away from your body
• If soup is too hot to eat, let it cool in bowl.
  Do not blow on it.
• Do not drink like its a cup of coffee

DONT GRAB IT FIRST Wait for the host to place
his/her napkin on his/her lap before placing
yours, or wait for the acknowledged head of the
table to take his/hers before taking yours.
Does the napkin have to be put on lap?

The host will signal the end of the meal by
placing his or her napkin on the table.
DO keep your napkin in your lap until everyone at
the table has finished eating.
Do not hand it to the server or place it on top
of your plate when you are finished. Your napkin
should be folded loosely and placed on the left
side of the plate

point and fork tines to the center of the plate
and handles to 4 oclock.

• Taste its ok to ask for a taste of the wine

• Check the label to be sure it is the exact wine
  that was ordered.

• The first taste is offered to the host/hostess,
  who will take a sip and indicate approval or
  disapproval but the host/hostess is served last,
  after all the guests have been served.

• Toast look humble and appreciative. Initiate a
  return toast by saying a simple thanks and taking
  a sip

Other things you should know
Always be patient and wait until everyone has
been served
Its embarrassing to start eating before the host
or hostess has had a chance to say grace or
present a toast
DONT chew gum in a restaurant. Remove it from
your mouth before entering the restaurant. Do not
place gum on the edge of your plate, in your
napkin or under the table. Find a waste can.
Dont be a food critic
Never address your server as boy, son, honey or
dear

Other things you should know
Avoid taking calls during meals, particularly on
cell phones
If food gets caught between your teeth and you
can't remove it with your tongue, leave the table
and go to a mirror where you can remove the food
from your teeth in private.
Eat rolls or bread by tearing off small bite size
pieces and buttering only the piece you are
preparing to eat.
DONT share food. Tasting other peoples food is
acceptable only if the owner places it on an
unused separate side plate. Never eat from
another persons plate or use another persons
utensils.

Ladies, when would you put your purse when you
are eating?
You can place your purse on your lap or between
your back and the chair.

Once you have used a piece of silverware, never
place it back on the table. Place it on the plate
or a saucer. Any unused silverware is simply left
on the table.
The salt and pepper are always passed together
even if you are asked to pass just salt.
Never season your food before tasting it

Other things you should know
Small bites of food are better to take than large
ones so that you can respond easily when spoken
to without having your mouthful and its also
better for the digestion.
Never spit a piece of bad food or tough gristle
into your napkin. Remove the food from your mouth
using the same utensil it went in with. Place the
piece of food on the edge of your plate.
If you or someone you are dining with is
left-handed, it is better for the left-handed
person to sit at the left end of the table or at
the head of the table.

Slurping, smacking or otherwise eating food in a
noticeably audible or visible manner is never
pleasant for those who are present.
Never talk with food in your mouth or on your
utensil. The last thing you want to do is eject
food at the person to whom you are speaking. Chew
with your mouth closed and no noise
If you spill something, don't make a big deal of
it

If your silverware falls onto the floor, pick it
up if you can easily reach it and let the server
know you need a clean one. If you can't reach
it, tell the server you dropped a piece of your
silverware and ask for a clean one.
