Progress on Accelerated Measles Control

• AFRO and countries have implemented successful
  measles control strategies with nearly a 50
  reduction in measles mortality

  and follow-up SIAs

Rubella in AFROWhat Should Be Done?

• Primary public health concern is rubella during
  pregnancy leading to CRS
• No good documentation of number of cases of CRS
  in Africa Region estimates exist
• Many issues to consider before introduction of
  rubella vaccine
• Epidemiology of rubella and effect of vaccine
• Burden of CRS
• Cost-effectiveness
• Priority
• Financial costs

reduction goals, but there is a need to

• State clearly what the goal is for the next 5
  years
• Is accelerated measles control the endpoint or
  should AFRO move to a measles elimination goal?
• Address emerging issues need for good outbreak
