4Paragraph 1
No one knew how to drill terror into sailors
hearts like the dreaded pirate Blackbeard, who
ruled the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Coast
from 1716 to 1718. Wisps of smoke curled from
his coal-black beard, and six loaded pistols
dangled across his chest. Among the legends of
his cruelty he fired randomly at his crew, and
he once forced a captive to eat his own ears.
5Paragraph 2
In 1718 the fierce captain steered his lead ship
into a sandbar off North Carolina. Some say he
was trying to escape pursuers. But it is also
said that Blackbeard (whose real name was Edward
Teach) yearned for a calmer life on land and thus
broke up his fleet. He scrambled to shore as the
Queen Annes Revenge sank, only to be killed and
beheaded by troops in Virginia a few months later.
6Paragraph 3
Last week divers announced the discovery of what
is probably the wreck of the Revenge, just off
the coast of North Carolina. Says Mike Daniel,
who first spotted the ship It was in only about
20 feet of water! Among the sunken treasures
were guns, cannonballs and a bell dated 1709.
Still, researchers who spent 10 years piecing
together pirate lore to locate Blackbeards loot
must find further proof that this was indeed his
ship.
7Paragraph 1
- Near the coast of Madagascars tiny island of
Sainte-Marie, explorer Barry Clifford floated
above a pile of smooth rocks. He blinked, swam
closer and realized his eyes werent fooling him.
There were pieces of pottery, white and crisp
blue, among the rocks. He rose to the surface
and shouted, I think Ive got it!
8Paragraph 2
- It was 302-year-old shipwreck. Last week
Clifford and his team announced they had found
what they believe is the wreck of the Adventure,
the ship of the infamous pirate William Kidd. The
Chinese pottery they found was made in the late
17th century, when Kidd was sailing. They also
found a metal oarlock, which keeps oars in place
on a galley ship.
9Paragraph 3
- The Adventures last voyage, in 1698, began as a
mission of justice. King William of England gave
Captain Kidd the ship and a crew, and orders to
capture pirates who were menacing ships in the
Indian Ocean. The Adventure was a galley a ship
powered by both sails and oars for rowing. It
was poorly built. Even worse, the first sailors
Kidd picked to help him were suddenly recruited
by Englands navy, so he had to hire a bunch of
losers for his crew.
10Paragraph 4
- The men did not rescue any ships in trouble.
Instead, they ended up becoming pirates
themselves, capturing two ships and their cargo.
Some blame the crazy crew for what happened.
Others say it was Kidds fault. After the awful
journey, he was found guilty of piracy and murder
and put to death.
11Paragraph 5
- A few experts say the discovery simply cant be
the Adventure. Author Richard Zacks, who is
writing a new book about Kidd, is among the
doubting. His research shows that the
Adventures oarlocks would have been wooden, not
iron, and that Kidd burned the ship on the beach.
Zacks cant believe anything was left of it, but
hes rooting for Cliffords team anyway.
