There was once a man who had five sons who were
always bickering. He decided to teach them a
lesson. He tied five sticks together in a
bundle. Then he challenged his sons to break the
bundle of sticks. Each one tried to break the
bundle of sticks over his knee and declared that
is could not be done. Then the father untied the
bundle, gave one stick to each son, and told them
to break the sticks. The sticks snapped like
matches. You see, said the father when a man
stands alone, he can be broken easily, but when
he is united with others, nothing can break him.

Probability is the fascinating branch of
mathematics that deals with chance. An example of
a problem in probability is the question What is
the probability of getting a head with one flip
of a dime? There are two equal possibilities,
so the probability is one half, or .5. Another
example is the questionIf a man was born in
January, what is the probability that he was born
