• By the mid 1870s voters had grown weary of
  reconstruction.
• Southern white voters are able to block
  reconstruction legislation.
• An economic downturn in 1873 moves public
  attention away from reconstruction.

• Rutherford B. Hayes is a winner of a
  controversial election.
• Compromise of 1877 Democrats let Hayes be
  president as long as Reconstruction would end.
