Family Background
  • Carls parents are August Sandburg and Clara
    Anderson.
  • They emigrated to America from Northern Sweden.
  • August was a railroad blacksmith and Clara was a
    hotel maid.

Education
  • Carl left school at the age of thirteen to work
    for his family.
  • Carl moved to Kansas then to Puerto Rico where he
    served in the Spanish-American war.
  • While Carl was serving in the war he met another
    man who went to school at Lombard College.
  • The man told Carl attend Lombard.
  • Carl went to the school when he got home from the
    war.
  • He graduated from Lombard after four years.

  • While Carl was in school he received the
    attention from a professor named Philip Green
    Wright.
  • Philip really liked Carl's writings. He liked
    them so much that he paid for a Pamphlet called
    Reckless Ecstasy to be published.
  • When Carl graduated he received a diploma and
    honorary degrees. He received these from
    Lombard, Knox College, and Northwestern
    University.
