PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
  • Leverage the intellectual capital and experience
    within the Wharton MBA program to bring business
    skills and ideas to the Philadelphia nonprofit
    community
  • Give MBA students exposure to the world of
    nonprofits, hopefully leading to a lifelong
    interest in community service
  • Develop Whartons brand as a program which caters
    to non-traditional business interests in addition
    to more common career paths, through increased
    offerings
  • Enrich Whartons leadership development program
    through unique practical experience for MBA
    students
  • Assist nonprofit organizations in finding new
    leaders

HISTORY
  • Third year of NPBLP
  • Launched through SIM in 2005
  • Recently brought into the Leadership Program
    which will provide administrative support and
    leadership expertise
  • Identified a need within Wharton, continuing to
    grow, evolve program
  • Benchmarking with other top MBA programs
  • Unique program offering
  • Leadership and nonprofit-related training
  • Placement of students based on interests
  • Currently have 12 Visiting Board Members
    serving 10 non-profit organizations

PROGRAM STRUCTURE (I)
  • Eligibility
  • Open to 2nd year MBA students and MBA dual degree
    candidates (post 1st year of program)
  • Title and role
  • Visiting Board Member for academic year
  • Assigned to a board committee, pending student
    interest
  • Also assigned a mentor from the non-profit
    organization
  • Non-profit placement
  • Match student interest with participating
    nonprofits
  • Based primarily on area of work
  • Size, geography scope limited

PROGRAM STRUCTURE (II)
  • Training and development
  • Introductory training sessions
  • 2 half-day sessions focused on roles, logistics,
    and expectations
  • Quarterly education sessions
  • Student commitment
  • Attend two mandatory trainings this spring and in
    the fall
  • Attend all board and assigned committee meetings
  • Attend quarterly education sessions
  • Follow through on all commitments to your
    non-profit
  • Participation fee of 150 to help cover costs
  • Costs us 700 per person for training, placement
  • Normal board fees waived for NPBLP participants
