PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
  • Mission statement
  • Leverage the intellectual capital and experience
    within the Wharton MBA program to bring business
    skills and ideas to the Philadelphia nonprofit
    community
  • Program objectives
  • Enrich the Wharton MBA experience by providing
    students with the unique, hands-on experience of
    serving on a nonprofit board
  • Provide Wharton MBA students with education and
    exposure to the world of nonprofits, thus
    creating a lifelong interest in community service
  • Be a highly sought-after resource for
    Philadelphia nonprofits in finding new talent and
    innovative ideas
  • Enhance Whartons brand as a program which caters

  • Third year of NPBLP
  • Launched in 2005 founded and run by Wharton
    students with support from the Leadership Program
  • Identified a need within Wharton, continuing to
    grow, evolve program
  • Benchmarked with other top MBA programs
  • Unique program offering
  • Leadership and nonprofit-related training
  • Placement of students based on interests
  • Modified structure after pilot year
  • Formerly partnered with the MBA Program Office
  • First year as part of Wharton Leadership Program
    provides administrative support and leadership
    expertise

PROGRAM STRUCTURE
  • Participant eligibility
  • Open to 2nd year MBA students and MBA dual degree
    candidates (post 1st year of program)
  • NPBLP Officers are NOT eligible to apply
    (recruiting for officer positions will take place
    later in Spring semester)
  • Title and role
  • Visiting Board Member for academic year
  • Assigned to a board committee, pending student
    interest
  • Also assigned a mentor from the non-profit
    organization
  • Non-profit placement
  • Match student interest with participating
    nonprofits
  • Based primarily on area of work
  • Size, geography scope limited

PROGRAM STRUCTURE
  • Training and development
  • Introductory sessions focusing on the following
  • Leadership development conflict management,
    leading up and group decision making
  • Critical aspects of board service nonprofit
    governance, strategic planning, finance,
    marketing, etc.
  • NPBLP specific information roles, expectations
    and logistics
  • Monthly check-in / education sessions during
    which program participants can share their
    experiences with peers
  • Student commitment
  • Attend mandatory trainings this spring and in the
    fall
  • Attend all board and assigned committee meetings
  • Attend monthly education sessions
  • Follow through on all commitments to your
    non-profit
  • Participation fee of 150 to help cover costs
  • Normal board fees waived for NPBLP participants

SELECTION PROCESS
  • Application process
  • Submit written application and resume
    (application will be provided via email and
    available at www.whartonnpblp.org )
  • In-person interview (invitation only)
  • Qualities of successful applicants
  • No previous non-profit board experience
  • Demonstrated involvement in activities outside of
    core job responsibilities
  • Desire to serve/ service orientation
  • Excited, passionate, and enthusiastic about the
    program
  • Not on academic probation
