all three competitions
4Common Concerns Addressed by Grassroots
Innovators
5Alternative Fuels
In addition, 20 entries suggested to solve
existing problems of kerosene lit stoves.
Out of the four entries preferring biomass,
suggested agri-waste, Dry-leaves, Barks and Pine
needles. There were clear concern amongst
innovators for cleaner environment . They
recommended alternative fuels for a variety of
reason i.e. prevent deforestation, save forests
from wildfire, recycling of waste etc.

9Macro-Analysis of Market
- Downtrend in usage of Kerosene-lit stoves/ovens
due to following reasons - Continuous rise in the price of the Kerosene
(currently between Rs.20-23) - Declining availability of kerosene
- Subsidized Kerosene (Rate Rs.10 per liter) being
black-marketed, resulting in artificial-price-hiki
ng for ludicrous purposes - Increasing availability and affordability of
substitutes i.e. LPG - Discomfort Unsafe nature of Kerosene based
stoves vis-Ã -vis LPG - Extremely price sensitive market due to
low-disposable income
10Macro-Analysis of Marketcontd.
- Due to all above factor following trends have
emerged - Out of 11 units in Ahmedabad, only two are
operational - Declining profitability for all in value chain
i.e. dealers manufacturers (e.g. Rs. 10-17 on
one piece of stove for retailers) - Low incentives for dealers encourages them to
push other products - Low entry barriers resulted in flooding the
market with local, cheap product range ( cheap in
price and quality as well) - Minimal sale for ISI certified products due to
high price (Rs. 400), and they are literally
non-existent in market. - Hence, only products with low-pricing are
surviving. Therefore recommended price bracket
for new entrant is Rs. 120-225 for two liter
model. A challenge for value addition function of
GIAN NIF.
11Inventory of Innovations
12Inventory of Innovationscontd.
13Slides of Some of the Innovations are as follows
14An Improved Kerosene Stove
Niranjan Prasad Sharma
- Preheated kerosene in gaseous state is fed into
the burner. - Consumes 25 less kerosene.
- Free from smoke, soot and sound.
- Removes drudgery of cleaning the soot filled
cooking vessels. - Favorable test results obtained from Indian
Institute of Petroleum, Dehradun on efficiency
and safety in operation.
15Improved Stove
Sameerul Hasan Liaquati
- Eliminates need to pump air.
- Eliminates need for regular cleaning of the
burner pores containing carbon deposits.
- Cost is almost same as conventional stove (Rs
300/-) - Even handicapped people, children women can
operate it due to less efforts and time required. - Favorable test results obtained from Indian
Institute of Petroleum, Dehradun.
16Kerogas Stove
Sarfuddin Amanuddin Kazi
- Preheated kerosene in gaseous state is used as
fuel. - Different in construction as compared to other
pre-heated kerosene stoves.
- No soot at the bottom of vessel due to blue
flame. This also eliminates blackening of
vessels.
- Cost is Rs. 1,000.
- Being smokeless, its use reduces pollution and
various health hazards.
17Multi utility fuel efficient stove
Mr. S. J. Joe
- High fuel efficiency (14 hrs in 1 liters as
compared to 7 hrs for conventional ones). - Have built in water jacket to tap heat lost on
side for heating water. - Smoke free and safe.
- Stoves available in one or multiple burners
18Kerosene Stove with Gravity feed fuel tank
cylinder wick
Mr. Mathew V. Mathew
- A smokeless, odorless and soundless without
chance of explosion - No external pressure required as gravity
facilitate the flow of fuel and vacuum created
through fuel consumption results in the opening
of the valve and fuel flow. - Consist of a burner with gravity feed tank and
cylindrical wick for reducing fuel consumption.
19Fuel efficient hybrid stove based on kerosene and
water
Vyasji Mishra
- Modification of conventional high pressure
cooking stoves. - Kerosene and water (stored in tanks) are used in
succession to light the stove. - Water claimed to be reducing temperature around
flame whereby enhances combustion eficiency
- Saves kerosene
- Tested at Indian Institute of Petroleum,
Dehradun, for favorable results.
20Steam Operated Stove
Mr. Rajiv Aggrawal
- The heat energy is improved almost by four times
with the reduction in fuel consumption upto 40 - Minimized air pollution to almost negligible.
- Process involves passing steam and air through
red hot carbon to form water gas and producer gas
with high caloric values. - Non polluting Low cost (about Rs. 350
- High Heat generation (about 40000 calories)
21Thanks !!!
