Title: Team Upperclass

1
Team Upperclass
  • Follow Up Presentation
  • Solar Boat Project

2
Design Modifications
  • Hull Designed changed twice on the fly.
  • Nose spine easier to construct with canoe like
    shape. (modification 1)
  • Hull impossible to fit to said shape
    (modification 2)
  • Structure of nose supports changed from parallel
    to bulkheads to perpendicular.

3
Construction
  • Spine modified for easier hull assembly
  • Perpendicular struts removed and replaced with
    2x6 custom cut curves.

4
Power
  • Designs called for Maximum Power Point Tracker
    for Solar Cell Optimization.
  • Resources dictated a simple battery charging
    system was sufficient.

5
Circuit
  • Circuit designed to pull energy from batteries
    while the cell recharged them.
  • Constant voltage monitoring necessary to prevent
    overheat.

6
Propulsion
  • Motor was internal to the boat, drive shaft
through hull at 20 with horizontal.
  • Original motor was 24V _at_ 6A, which required the
batteries to be in series for sufficient voltage.
  • After total system failure, a new motor was
acquired, and install. Rated at 12V.

7
Steering
  • Steering was a cable and pulley system.
  • Dual rudders controlled by two linked control
    sticks via switchboard cable.
  • A six point pulley system kept the cables in
    alignment during steering.
  • Switchboard cable not as strong as anticipated.

8
Budget
9
Conclusion
  • Boat proved particularly stable (and heavy)
  • Propulsion/Power system, while lacking speed,
could be used continuously as long as there was
sun to charge the battery bank.
  • Look for a website on the department site
    outlining the entire project.
