FactsPersonal health is public health!
  • Novel H1N1 influenza (swine flu) infections
    have raised concerns for the public and prompted
    immediate interventions by public health
    authorities.
  •  
  • It is cause for concern H1N1 flu has been found
    in numerous countries, and in many states within
    the United States.
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
    (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are
    taking aggressive measures to investigate the
    outbreak and limit its spread.
  •  
  • Prevention is key Recovery from influenza takes
    many days and lots of bed rest. Boosting your
    immunity and limiting exposure to germs will help
    you avoid infection.

PreventionYour health is in your hands!
  • Clean hands and surfaces prevent the spread Wash
    your hands often use soap and hot water scrub
    thoroughly.
  • Clean keyboards, phones, doorknobs, etc. avoid
    eating at your desk.
  • Avoid touching your face germs can enter through
    your mouth, nose, eyes.
  • Keep hand sanitizer at the ready its great for
    times you cant wash your hands. Germs are
    personal keep them to yourself.
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes use a tissue or a
    sleeve, not your hands.
  • Dont share personal items drinking/eating
    utensils, lip balm, toothbrushes, etc.

SymptomsWhat to notice and what to do!
  • Novel H1N1 influenza (swine flu) is a
    respiratory illness that causes symptoms similar
    to those of the regular seasonal flu. The
    symptoms include (A combination of the
    following)
  • Fever (100 )
  • Fatigue
  • Lack of appetite
  • Coughing
  • Sore throat
  • Occasionally, vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Like seasonal flu, H1N1 flu may cause secondary
    infections (such as pneumonia) and/or a worsening
    of underlying chronic medical conditions.
    Consult with YOUR PHYSICAN by telephone if you
    develop flu-like symptoms or if a case of the flu
    worsens. Students can call SHU Health Services at
    371-7838.

Self-CareIf prevention is not enough!
  • First - take care of yourself and protect others
    Rest up sleep as much as you can limit
    activity.Stay hydrated with water, tea, and
    other clear liquids.Manage symptoms for fever,
    runny nose, and cough with non-prescription
    meds.Stay out of circulation for at least 2 days
    after symptoms have subsided.If you have
    flu-like symptoms fever (100) fatigue lack of
    appetite coughing sore throat occasionally
    vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Consult by phone with YOUR RRIMARY CARE PHYSICHAN
    for a consultation.
  • SHU Student Health Services are by appointment at
    (203) 371-7838. Services Available Evaluation
    and treatment of acute illnesses and injuries
    Allergy injections Immunizations against
    measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, meningitis,
    tetanus Tuberculosis screening Gynecological
    care Suture removal Physicals Flu vaccine
    Diagnostic testing throat cultures, urine
    cultures, blood glucose are available at the
    Student Health Services Center.  All other lab
    work is sent to Quest labs and billed to students
    insurance.
