22WHY???
23Why You?
- You
-
- Prestige
- You will forever be a Fulbrighter, Luce Scholar,
or Humboldt Chancellor Fellow. - People
- Professional network the people on the
selection committee and your fellow fellows will
share a permanent bond with you. They will hire
you, review your work, and foster your
development throughout your career. - Practice
- The application process will greatly focus and
clarify your ideas while tuning up your thinking,
writing, and speaking. - In this way, the process is in and of itself
extremely useful.
24Why Them?
- The Funding Agency
- Prestige They want their name associated with
future leaders. - Luce Scholar Paul Gigot
- White House Fellow Colin Powell
- Particular agenda
- Some very narrow (Kroc radio journalism)
- Some extraordinarily broad (Fulbright
international understanding) - Products
- Patents/New Technology
- Publications/Citations
25Why Bother?
- A young professional walks into my office and
wants to know their chances at winning a
prestigious fellowship. My answer 100. - He or she may not win a monetary grant and
honorific title but will inevitably develop - a deeper understanding of his or her motivations
- a greater ability to articulate their work to a
non-specialist audience - refined pieces of writing with which to present
themselves to employers, peers, and the larger
world. - In the case of the Fulbright, Liebmann, Luce, and
Mitchell applicants receive feedback from
Northwesterns faculty nominating committees that
can be put to use in future applications,
publications, and job interviews. - In short, applying for a fellowship is a no-risk
proposition. - Everyone wins!
