Title: Ulrichs Serials Analysis System
1Ulrichs Serials Analysis System
- A new tool from Bowker that allows librarians to
evaluate their serials collections with
confidence.
2Be prepared to make collection-critical decisions
- Did you ever need
- To show your collections strengths (and
weaknesses) when stacked up to a core collection?
- A report of all refereed serials in your
collection on a certain subject? - A way to rank serials publishers by key industry
standards?
3Ulrichs Serials Analysis System is the answer!
- You need a critical understanding of your print
- and electronic serials collections for
- Colleagues
- Patrons
- Potential professors and students
- Your administrators
- Accreditation committees
- Others evaluating the quality of your collections
4The first step will be to load your collections
into the system.
Compare your collections to the Ulrichs universe
or to a core collection.
5- Evaluate your librarys collections by subject
category. - See how they stack up by key criteria
- Are they refereed?
- Do they have an ISI Impact Factor?
- Are they recommended in Katzs Magazines for
Libraries? - Are they available in an electronic format?
6Switch from Summary to Detailed Reporting level
to expand Subject Categories.
7Here we see a Detailed Report. Click on the
number of Core Titles the Library Does Not Hold
in any subject to view a list of those titles.
8Here you see a list of serials your library does
not hold in the subject of Biochemistry. By
clicking on column headings you can re-sort the
list. We have sorted by Electronic Journal.
9This list has been re-sorted by selecting ISI
Impact Factor. Click on an ISSN to view full
title detail in ulrichsweb.com
10In ulrichsweb.com we can evaluate this title by
viewing full title detail and publisher
information, and link to tables of contents and
full text. We can add this title to a list,
download title information, print, or e-mail
title details to colleagues for selection,
deselection, or further evaluation.
11Evaluate the offerings of serials publishers
The same information is available to evaluate the
offerings of serials publishers. Select a
publisher from the Top Publishers menu. Select
List Matches to view only those subjects
included in the publishers offerings.
12Here we see a Summary Report of Elseviers
offerings compared to the Ulrichs Universe in
subjects that match their list. We can also limit
the titles we are comparing to those recommended
in Katzs Magazines for Libraries, to find only
serials that have been reviewed.
13Here, rather than limiting the results, we have
sorted the publishers list by Katzs Magazines
for Libraries. We can now select a title by
clicking on the ISSN Or we can go straight to
the Review by selecting the right-hand column
entry.
14See rich detail in ulrichsweb.com
- We have gone straight to the review in
ulrichsweb.com. - From here we can further evaluate this title by
viewing - title-level details
- formats available

- link to tables of contents and full text
- your JCR Web, Science Direct, SFX, and
Serials Solutions resources.
15Share your Librarys report
You may need to share your librarys report.
Simply download an Excel file, as shown here.
Reports containing title-level information have
an ASCII download format. Save, re-sort, print,
and share your report with colleagues.
16Identify and correct errors
Another key feature of the Ulrichs Serials
Analysis System is the ability for your library
to correct errors in your holdings file. At the
bottom of your librarys report you may see a
Note like this one, which will bring you to a
separate report on titles with problem ISSNs.
17You may edit your librarys title list by using
the link at the top of your reports and selecting
to view the titles on your list.
Here you may make any edits to your list, such as
correcting, or deleting, non-matching and
duplicate ISSNs. You may also upload your
librarys updated titles.
18Evaluate, build, and report on your collections
with confidence
- Identify gaps and rank your collections by key
industry standards. - Evaluate your serials print and electronic
holdings as well as those of top publishers. - Make educated purchasing and deselection
decisions. - Save time, effort, and resources and maintain a
