Title: A Virtual Learning Environment
1A Virtual Learning Environment
- Objectives
- To learn what the VLE is and
- understand its potential as a learning tool
2Whats a VLE?
- A VLE is a Virtual Learning Environment
- Wintringhams VLE is THE LIGHTHOUSE FOR EDUCATION
3The VLE
- The VLE allows students to access learning
anytime of day (or night!) - It allows absent students to keep up to date with
important work it can be used as a distance
learning tool - It encourages independent learning so the pupil
has ownership over their own education - The VLE can support interactive learning
programmes to encourage students to enjoy
learning and help kinaesthetic learners to achieve
4- Teachers can set homework's on the VLE in the
form of eLFs (e-learning folios) which can be
linked to files or internet sites and
subsequently tracked to check student use. - eLFs also allow for submission from the pupils,
which help towards a paperless school system and
lightens - teacher workload
5THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF MY eLF SUBMISSIONS
6- Studies show some fairly strong correlations from
3 different curriculum areas that making
assignments available to students on a VLE has
had the following effects.
a) increases the frequency of "on time"
assignment hand-ins b) allows for fast-tracking
for more able students c) has increased
retention and achievement
7- There is much debate as to whether VLEs save
time for students and tutors.
In the case of teachers, a VLE can help you to
change the focus of your time since much time is
lost through students copying complicated
diagrams and references and general
administration these can be transferred to the
VLE. It will also reduce time required for
photocopying and handing out lost homework's
8On our VLE you can
- Set homework's which can be submitted
electronically - You can set a task to visit certain websites and
track students progress - You can put any relevant course information in
folders for children to access - You can set cover work
- You can put your lessons and lesson plans on it
- You can have a discussion room for students to
talk about work - You can show pictures
- You can set up surveys or voting systems
- You can put frequently asked questions on it
often helpful with lower ability students - You can put fun games on there
- You can give information about what you are
currently teaching - You can store website addresses on it for
students who want extra work - You can put notices on a notice board
- You can put deadlines on the calendar
9On our VLE you cant
- Automatically mark tests and track student
progress - However we can use other software that cansuch
as yacapaca.com a free chalkface project. This
has a number of ready made quizzes, tests and
revision programmes that can be used or you can
make your own up.
10How we felt before the VLE!
11What teachers using the system in our school have
said!
- I use the VLE for distance learning it works so
well - Its easy to check students homework and stops
unnecessary paperwork - I can set extra homework, which can be accessed
by pupils in their own time at home - I can check that they have actually gone on the
website I asked - The students have become much more IT literate
- The more able can use the recommended websites to
progress - They can get engaged and excited by fun
activities - Theres extra help available for the less able
- The students have no excuse not to do their work
(i.e. lost worksheets) - The dog cant eat their homework!
- They can discuss idea with other members of their
group and even me!
