Referencing
12
Referencing
  • In all your assessed work you will get more marks
if you include short quotes from other peoples
    work
  • Do not copy whole chunks.
  • Rewrite in your own words and use short quotes in
    quotation marks

13
Referencing
  • Essential to use quotation marks and show where
    you are copying from.
  • If you copy without showing where from you get NO
MARKS (this is called plagiarism and is
    considered cheating)

14
Referencing
  • Use the Harvard System
  • Give authors surname and date and the page
number in the text after the quotation
  • Give the full details in the bibliography at the
    end

15
Referencing books
  • Give authors surname and date
  • If you are quoting also give the page number e.g.
  • Kumar (2003) identifies eight key stages of a
    research project.
  • The importance of carrying out research
ethically cannot be overstated (Smith, 1999
    p 15)

16
Referencing reports
  • Some official reports do not give the authors
    name.
  • Use the name of the organisation instead
  • E.g.
  • Home Office (2002)
  • Department of Health (2005)

17
Referencing Uclan handouts
  • Give the page number of the handout in brackets
after the year of publication (Uclan, 2006, p23)
  • If you copy something from the handouts place it
    in quotation marks
  • Usually better to write in your own words and
show where you get it from

18
Referencing internet sources
  • Do NOT give the web address in the text
  • If you can find the authors name give it
  • If not give the name of the organisation
  • If you can find the date the web page was
    published give it
  • If not give the date you accessed the web page
  • Give the name and date and full web address in
the bibliography along with the date you accessed
    the page

19
Bibliography
  • At the end of your portfolio give a list of all
the books, reports and web pages you refer to
  • Full details of how to do this in the student
    handbook

20
Handing in
21
Presentation
  • Typing is best
  • Hand writing is OK if very easy to read
  • Do NOT put in plastic pockets
  • Simply staple sheets to the front cover
  • Sign front cover sheet

22
Deadlines
  • Important to hand in on time
  • You will lose marks if you are late
  • If you have any problems which mean you cannot
hand in on time then speak to your support worker

23
Deadlines
  • Support worker can give a short extension
    (maximum 10 days)
  • If you need a longer extension you need to use
    the extenuating circumstances procedure
  • Need evidence (e.g. medical certificate)
  • Support worker will help you with this

24
Research questions
  • GOOD PRACTICE

25
Research questions
  • Read question carefully
  • Answer all parts of the question
  • Do what the questions ask no more no less.
  • You get no marks for interesting pieces of
information which are not relevant to the
    question

26
Research questions
  • To pass give a simple answer based on a workshop
    handout
  • To get a distinction consider different points
    of view e.g.
  • different sources within handouts
  • other material you have read
  • your personal experience on project

27
Research questions
  • Start now - Do a draft answer to each question as
    you go through the course
  • Ask questions when you dont understand (ask
    presenter and support worker)
  • Show your support worker your draft work at
    agreed times

28
Review your work
  • Leave time at the end to review your work
    (several days is best).
  • Read what you have written and ask yourself
  • Does this answer the question?
  • If not edit it so it does.
  • Are all my points clear and easy to understand?
  • If not, rewrite clearly
  • Simple sentences are often best

29
Dont
  • copy from other students
  • let other students copy from you
  • It is OK to work together as long as you do not
    write up your answers together.

30
Dont
  • forget quotation marks when you copy text
  • copy large chunks of text (better to rewrite in
    your own words)
  • leave the work until the last minute

31
Reflection on learning
  • GOOD PRACTICE

32
Reflection on Learning
  • Follow instructions carefully. There are three
    parts to this
  • Answer questions 1 to 6
  • Complete action plan
  • Write about how you developed your skills

33
Reflection 1 Questions 1 to 6
  • Answer fully and honestly
  • It is OK to write in bullet points here.

34
Reflection 2 Action plan

  • Complete action plan for both
  • OK to write in bullet points

35
Reflection 3 Skills and qualities
  • Choose four of the skills or personal qualities
that you mention in questions 4 5 and for each
one describe how you have developed this skill
over the course of the project.
  • Write in complete sentences
  • Give evidence of how you have developed this skill

36
Reflection 3 Skills and qualities
  • Include examples of what happened during your
project that required you to learn this skill or
    develop this quality.
  • Did you take any special actions to develop the
skill/quality (e.g. practise, read books, ask
    others)?

37
Reflection 3 Skills and qualities
  • You could describe what you were able to do at
the beginning of the project and then at the end
to show how you have developed.
  • If you had to prove that you had developed this
skill/quality, what evidence could you use?
  • You do not need to include any evidence just
    describe it.

38
If in doubt.
  • ASK YOUR SUPPORT WORKER
