Title: A Performance View of Multiple Understandings

1
A Performance View of Multiple Understandings
  • Concept Connect failed British attempts to
assimilate New France with rising issues in the
13 Colonies and the move to bi-culturalism with
the Quebec Act of 1774 and its connection with
    the current Canadian political landscape.
  • (In other words explain how the American
Revolution contributed to our current issues with
    Quebec in Canada.)

2
A Performance View of Multiple Understandings
  • Attention
  • Social Split the class into groups, one to
discuss the pros of assimilation and of
bi-culturalism as it relates to the work that
Governors Carlton and Murray were tasked to
    carry out.
  • Aesthetic Have the class read the poem
Evangeline and discuss the issue of forced
assimilation and how it relates to British
    decisions impacting the Quebec Act.
  • Activity
  • Social Have the class look at the concessions
that Murray and Carlton made during their terms
and how their experience could have impacted
Englands approach to the Quebec Act in light of
    agitation in the 13 Colonies.
  • Aesthetic Have students draft a Resolution as
their own version of the Quebec Act to try and
meet the goals of bringing the French onside and
    containing the American colonies.

A Performance View of Multiple Understandings
  • Assesment
  • Students can clearly relate the change in British
policy toward New France with the need for
shoring up alliances in North America in light of
a possible uprising in the 13 Colonies.
  • In a class discussion students can verbally
demonstrate the connection between the American
Revolution (and the reasons behind the Quebec
Act) and our bi-cultural roots as they relate to
    issues in Quebec today. Bi-lingualism,
    separatism etc.
