Blessed are the poor in spirit for the kingdom
of heaven is theirs!

• Here Jesus is giving hope to the oppressed and
  those with no future, telling them they will own
  heaven in their own way.

Blessed are the mourners for they shall be
comforted!

• I believe Jesus is referring to those who lost
  loved ones for whatever reason, and that they
  will be comforted by reuniting with them in
  heaven.

Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the
earth!

• In any culture those who are meek seemed to get
  walked on or taken advantage by those are not
  as generous, so as a reward they will be given
  the earth.

Blessed are they that hunger and thirst for
righteousness for they shall be satiated!

• Jeses makes reference to those who have been
  falsely accused, and who actively seek justice,
  for in the end they will be rewarded.

Blessed are the merciful for on them shall be
mercies!

• Obviously Jesus is saying that those who show
  compassion to others here on earth will receive
  the same treatment in heaven.

Blessed are the clean in heart for they shall
behold God!

• By staying pure in both actions and thoughts,
  Jesus said it will be these people who get to see
  the face of God.

Blessed are the cultivators of peace for they
shall be called sons of God!

• Special recognition is given to those who
  dedicate themselves to planting seeds of peace,
  and in return God will call them His sons.

Blessed are they that are persecuted on account
of righteousnessfor the kingdom of heaven is
theirs!

• Jesus praises those who are actively persecuted
  for their faith in Him, and therefore they will
  inherit heaven for all that they go through on
  earth.
