Title: A Candidate Strategy for the Future Handheld

1
A Candidate Strategyfor theFuture Handheld
  • John Langer
  • The Aerospace Corporation

2
Objective
  • Objective
  • Bring advantages of commercial SPS market to the
    US and allied warfighter, and
  • Maintain the PPS advantages of military
exclusivity and resistance to electronic attack

3
Objectives and Background
  • Previous approach (DAGR)
  • Study commercial devices and levy their benefits
as requirements in a traditional military
    acquisition
  • Pro Strong PPS receiver performance
  • Con Interface and features are quickly outdated

4
The Candidate Strategy
  • Put two parallel contracting schemes in place
  • One wholly unclassified effort to develop an
SPS-based GPS receiver with all the needed
functions, with the SPS GPS functions relegated
to an interface such as a removable cartridge
  • One military procurement to develop PPS
cartridges that can be swapped for the SPS
    cartridge

5
Main Unit
  • Performs mapping, routing, display functions
  • No classified or controlled components
  • Standard commercial interfaces
  • USB, SD/Flash
  • Removable SPS GPS cartridge performs all GPS
functions, outputs only basic PNT data
  • Cartridge interface based on ICD-GPS-153
  • Candidate for small business or Foreign
    Comparative Testing (FCT)

6
Military Cartridges
  • Removable PPS GPS cartridges performs all GPS
functions, output only basic PNT data
  • Cartridge is derivative of GB-GRAM / GB-GRAM-M
  • SAASM version can be produced by any of several
    military SAASM contractors
  • YMCA version can be developed by any of several
    military YMCA contractors
  • Cartridge interface same as for SPS unit

7
Objectives for Main Unit
  • Meet all environmental requirements in CDD
  • Meet size, weight, power requirements
  • Meet display requirements
  • Process commercial standard maps (e.g. Google)
  • Process NGA standard maps
  • Include additional sensors such as clock,
    compass, MEMS IMU, etc

Commercial SPS features
8
Objectives for the PPS Cartridges
  • Meet all the CDD thresholds for accuracy and EW
functions such as jamming and spoofing

Warfighter effectiveness
PPS advantages
9
Trade Studies
  • Need to develop power budget allocations for main
    unit and cartridge
  • Power requirements for PPS modules may be higher
  • Need to develop SWaP allocations for main unit
    and cartridge
  • Evaluate nice to have accessories and
    interfaces
  • External antennas, map-loaders, etc.
  • Explore extending the interface to support
    blended sensor or nav/comm approaches
  • Ties this effort the GPSW RDTE activities

10
Interface Issues
  • Enable reporting requirements for EW features
(e.g. jamming environment detected), but EW
features themselves are relegated to the PPS
    cartridges
  • Is ICD-GPS-153 the correct starting point?

11
Caveat
  • This is just one of several candidate contracting
approaches for the next generation military GPS
    handheld
