Title: The Emerald Ash Borer

1
The Emerald Ash Borer
  • The Killer of Ohios ash trees. It is a pain in
    the ash!

2
The Larva and the Adult
3
It came from Asia
  • What could a 1/2 inch beetle do to a tree?
  • Since it was first discovered in Michigan in 2002
it has killed over 10 million ash trees.
  • So far the beetle has been found in only 18
    counties of Ohio.

4
It only kills Ash trees.
  • This is an ash leaf.
  • Ash wood is used for tool handles (hammers,
    rakes), ladders, and baseball bats.
  • Ohio has an estimated 3.8 billion Ash trees or
    about 12 of our forests.

5
It is not the Adult that causes the harm
  • The tunnels caused by the feeding larva eat the
tissues that transport the water and nutrients
    within the tree.
  • No nutrient flow means the tree will die.

6
The death of a tree.
  • This ash tree is dying. The safest and only
way to prevent other nearby ash trees from dying
is to cut the tree down, chip it up, and burn the
    chips.
  • Ash trees are common in peoples yards.

7
Prevention
  • There is only one control method. Kill the
    infested tree.
  • After the infested tree is removed and burned all
Ash trees within ¼ mile are cut and burned as
    well.
  • Homeowners DO NOT have a choice. If your
neighbor has this insect your trees will be cut
    down.

8
Pictures
  • ADULT
  • This is a scar on the tree where the adult bored
    into the tree.

9
What has been done.
  • So far 14,000 square miles are quarantined (no
wood in or out) causing financial problems to the
    timber industry.
  • 2,500,000 have been cut and burned in Ohio.
  • Ohio has received 4 million to help stop this
    pest.
