10The reality of university today
- 50 of graduates dont complete their degree
within 3 years - The average student debt is 18,726
- A typical salary for a new graduate is 35,000 -
40,000
11Apprenticeships are working ...
- A newly qualified tradesperson typically earns
35,000 - 60,000 - An apprentice will earn approximately 75,000
during their apprenticeship - An apprentice studies on the job, therefore has a
3 year head start with work experience
sometimes there is no shortcut to time!
12Challenges
- Should more consideration be placed on carving
out pathways, based on learning (and other)
preferences of students and industry and
employment needs? - Greater emphasis is placed on full time
tertiary study -
- Industry has to take part responsibility for
this schools and parents cant push what they
dont know! - Industry training cannot make itself heard above
the est. 50M - 100M spent on marketing by full
time tertiary providers Careers Expos are an
example of this -
13Some grey sky thinking for the future i.e. Im
not sure Ive got it right!
Develop a campaign to highlight the value of all
forms of capability, intelligence and wisdom
Equity and diversity doesnt have to be a
paradox! Advocate a change with how schools are
measured to reflect how people learn and where
employment is now, and in the future Sometimes
theories around learning can evolve faster than
humans do!
