Title: BISHOPS HOUSE

1
BISHOPS HOUSE
  • A journey into the pastby Laura and Ellie in Y4S.

2
On the 17th March 2008 our class went on a school
trip to Bishops House. We were very excited as we
approached the coach. The coach was gigantic,
white and very comfortable. Everyone would not
stop talking as they were So excited. The journey
only took about ten minutes.
3
When we first saw Bishops House we thought it
looked gigantic, white and black. We drew
pictures of the outside of the house. It looked
like a very old house. We drew things that looked
interesting like the windows and the doors and
the stone work.
4
We discovered that a lady called Hazel was
going to show us around the house and do
activities with us. Hazel had long, brown, shiny
hair and a long, dark green dress. First she told
us about all the animals that lived in the house
like rats, mice and insects too. She told us how
William Blythe the farmer used to live there. We
all had worksheets to complete throughout the
day.
5
Later on we went upstairs and had a look in the
bedroom. We wrote an inventory of the bed room,
which means making a list of what they had in
the bedroom. There was a 4 poster bed with a
little canopy over it so that the animals poo
could not fall on their HEADS! There were also
other things in the room like the toilet,
candle, crib, fireplace and even a bed warmer.
6
The next thing we did was look at items from
Tudor times and guess if they were for the rich
or the poor. We found out that pewter was
poisonous because it was made out of metal and
lead. After that we dressed up as Tudor people
like wisewomen poorly children, doctors, doctors
assistants and a poorly rich man. Hazel put
pretend maggots in our hands as an antidote for
the rich mans disease.
7
These are poor and rich drinking Cups. The shiny
horn cups were drunken from by the nearly rich
people and so is the metal one. The clay one is
for poor people. We found this out by looking at
the materials.
8
On this picture you can see us playing on Tudor
stilts. The other children are playing with a
cup and ball, skittles, yoyo and whip. We found
playing with the toys such fun.
9
Later on in the day we went to do some Tudor
writing and we wrote our names in old English
using a feather pen called a quill. We found it
easier than we thought but not as easy as
writing with a pencil. Also we had to crack a
code.
10
At the end of the day we all made pomanders by
pushing cloves into an orange. After a month they
will start smelling nice so we can put them in
a drawer where our clothes are and then our
clothes will start to smell nice too!
We had a really nice day and we hope we can go
again!
