Context of the project
Maritza
5
Context of the project
Specific project conditions/objectives
  • Meet the future electricity demand in the country
  • Possibly substitute old, unsafe, inefficient and
    environmentally hostile power plants, both
    lignite, hard coal
  • Meet lignite extraction targets for the Maritza
    East mines
  • Due to general low-grade quality of Bulgarias
lignite gt Air Pollution Control equipment are
    necessary
  • Improve environmental conditions in the area

Maritza East 1 project has several objectives

Technical description
Project characteristics
  • Full turnkey project
  • 670 MWe gross, 600 MWe net USC boilers with high
efficiency2 units of 335 MWe each to be realized
adjacent to the existing Maritza East 1 power
    plant
  • Lignite-fired plant with the state of the art APC
    equipment
  • End user AES-3C
  • Base load facility, effective annual capacity
    factor of 95

gt Can be achieved only with careful selection of
key components

Impact on the region
Many positive impacts on different aspects
  • Regional development
  • Employment
  • Continuation of lignite mine and limestone quarry
    operations
  • Tax revenues
  • Related industries
  • Technology transfer
  • Overall stimulation at the local and national
    levels

Agenda

Environmental compliance
Environmental friendly project
  • Noise emissions - attention given for both the
installation and the surroundings - majority of
noisy components installed within a building -
ID fans fitted with discharge silencers -
    distance from external receptors maximized
  • Local water quality improvement - zero
discharge of process water - lakes rivers
protected - reduce thermal and chemical impact
to surface water quality - WFGD make-up water
partly constituted by the blow-down from the main
cooling tower to reduce water consumption

13
Environmental compliance
Improved air quality by removing the SO2
  • Reduced ecological impact resulting from acid
rains (especially for forest and lakes)
  • Long term improvement and human health benefits
by applying the Bulgarian, European and World
    Bank ambient air quality criteria
  • The actual regulation in Bulgaria on SO2, Nox,
CO, Pb, PM10 and PM2.5more or less mirrors the
EU regulation (PM2.5 is not yet regulated by EU)
  • The World Bank qualifies as poor the air quality
in the region at the moment regarding the SO2

14
Environmental compliance
WFGD design details
  • Designed for SO2 inlet concentration of 21890
    mg/Nm3 (dry 6 O2), equivalent to 2.7 sulphur
content of the lignite. Would not exceed 400
mg/Nm3 as SO2 outlet concentration (more than 98
    of the SO2 is removed)
  • Absorber designed for 22500 ppm Chlorides content
    (material selection for 35000 ppm)
  • Blow-down flow rate minimized and fixed at 10
    m3/hr
  • 7 spray levels at design conditions, only 6 in
    operation at guaranteed conditions
  • Absorber equipped with Performance Enhancement
Plates (Alstom patent to reduce the
  • gas by-pass along the walls and thus power)
  • Gypsum by-product to be landfilled as inert
    material

Conclusions
  • Eastern Europe countries are more and more
    focused on sustainable development
  • A power station can play an important role if
    properly designed.
  • Alstom Maritza East 1 Power Plant has one of the
highest efficiency thus using less lignite per KW
produced as well as most advanced APC equipment
to reduce emissions below LCPD Directive
  • The project will help Bulgarias development and
pave the way to further power projects and
    investment in the country

As a global specialist in plants integration and
environmental control systems, Alstom has paid
careful attention to any aspects of the Maritza
East 1 project, thus preserving air, water and
soil
