Summary
This is a book about a young girl, Karana, who
must learn to survive on her own on the island.
After her father is killed, the villagers decide
to leave the island. Karanas 6 year old brother,
is left behind, and she returns to get him. Ramo,
her brother, is soon killed by a pack of wild
dogs, led by Rontu. Karanas goal is to kill the
pack, especially their leader. After injuring
Rontu, she nurses him to health and learns to
love him. Together, they survive nature and its
enemies, including the strangers that rarely
appear. Karana has learned how to survive with
Rontu, her one-time enemy. When Rontu dies,
Karana befriends his son, Rontu-Aru. Thy
eventually leave the island with a ship of
hunters, who never return until after 18 years of
being alone without human life surrounding them.
She never sees her family again.

Setting
The setting takes place in the village of
Ghalas-at, which is located on the Island of the
Blue Dolphins. This island is located on the
coast of California.

Main Character
The main character is a 12 year old girl named
Karana. She is also Known as Won-a-pa-lei, or
Girl with Long Black Hair. She is the daughter of
the Chief of Ghalas-at, Chowig, has an older
sister, Ulape, and a 6 year old brother named
Ramo.

Opinion
My opinion of the book was that I really liked
it, especially the part when at the ending, she
finally gets to move off the island, but she
doesnt go where her family is living, she goes
off with a group of hunters to a different place
that is far away from her family.
