Title: Electricity Grid Services and District Heating
1Electricity Grid Services and District Heating
2Energi Fyn
- Energi Fyn is a consumer-owned electricity
distribution company - supplying approximately 85,000 grid customers in
Funen with - electricity.
- Turnover, approximate DKK 0.5 bn
- Employees, approximate 120
- Most important business areas
- Electricity distribution
- Electricity trading
- Fibre-optic networking
- Contractor tasks
- Power balancing
3Power Balancing a Method for Managing the
Electricity Grid
- When does the electricity grid need help?
- When yesterdays forecast for power consumption
and production fails.
4Power-Balancing Need in Jutland and Funen

5Bound Production and Consumption,Two Days in

Need for upward regulation
Probable need for for downward regulation

High concentration
- By 1 March 2004
- 4,175 wind turbines 2,374 MW
- Average size of wind turbines approx. 570 kW
- Average rotor diameter approx. 40 metres
- Average hub height approx. 40.5 metres
- 75 per cent of the installed wind capacity in
- Denmark.

9Renewable Energy Amplifies the Inability to
Store Capacity
- Possibilities
- allow centralised to run at partial capacity
- manage the grid via local embedded CHPs, or
- enhance the capacity of power-balancing stations
with speedier response times
10Denmarks Electricity Grid
- The electricity grid in Denmark is well-developed
but not - dimensioned for moving large volumes of locally
produced - electricity.
- As a result, local power balancing facilities are
an alternative to - enlarging the overall electricity grid.
- Connections to foreign countries
- Our point of departure is a balanced system and
to achieve this requires power balancing.
Otherwise, the connections must be much stronger
if the system is to be used for balancing power. - If problems arise with wind-power production in
West Denmark, the same will usually occur in
Northern Germany.
11What is a power balancing facility?
- Upward regulationg typically involves a power
station equipped with diesel-powered generator
systems
12What is a power balancing facility?
- Downward regulation usually involves an
electrical boiler
13Utilising Surplus Electricity for Heat Production
- Electricity is easy to convert into (storable)
hot water - The system must be connected to a
district-heating grid with accumulation
potential - Electric boilers are relatively easy to install
- Alternative to downward regulation
- Stop wind turbines
- Does this make sense?
- Not if the energy can be used for generating
heat. - Electricity taxes can be an obstacle to the
financial viability, - however.
14Financial Aspects of Power Balancing
- Budgeted income base
- Availability payments, upward regulation 35
- Availability payments, downward regulation 15
- Carbon quotas 35
- Electricity production 5
- Heat production 5
- Investment approx. DKK 45 mill. EUR 6 mill.
