Pioneers

Shelter

• Pioneers lived in log cabins. They were made of
  logs. They also made sod houses. Chimneys were
  made of field stones.

Food

• They hunted wild turkey goose moose deer rabbit
  squirrel raccoon and fish. Meat they salted and
  smoked it. They had a family cow for milk, cream
  and cheese. They made their own bread in a bake
  oven they had to cook over open fires. They used
  sap from maple trees for syrup and brown sugar.

Clothing

• Pioneers made clothing from animal skins, wool
  and linen. They made yarn by spinning the fleece
  on a spinning wheel. Linen was made from flax.
  Women and girls wore long dresses bonnets and
  aprons while men often wore overalls.

School

• There was a one room school house for all pupils
  and all grades teacher very strict. Pupils had a
  very few books and paper. They used slates and
  feather quill pens and chalk. Teachers were
  early to prepare lessons.

Transportation

• To get from one place to another pioneers rode
  horse walked or used wagons pulled by horses or
  oxen they sleds in winter on water raft or canoe
  or kayak.
