Mission Statement
  • The speech and language therapy department aims
    to maximise the potential of all its clients with
    communication and swallowing difficulties.

Service divided into
  • Community clinics
  • Special schools and specialist teaching
    facilities within mainstream schools
  • Pre school special needs service (PSSN)
  • Flying Start
  • Sure Start

Referrals
  • Open referral system
  • Approximately 45 in N/PT locality and 52 in
    Bridgend locality, per month.
  • 47of referrals come from Health Visitors
  • 17of referrals from paediatricians
  • 15 of referrals from schools/education

Staffing - therapists
  • 6.89 w.t.e. in community clinics
  • 7.95 w.t.e in schools service
  • 1.79 w.t.e. in pre school service
  • 1.29 w.t.e in Flying Start service
  • 0.45 w.t.e in Sure Start Service

Community Clinics
  • 18mths-16years
  • Every parent attends a parent information group
    within 6 weeks of referral
  • Children are assessed within the next 4 weeks
  • If therapy is required then this commences 14
    weeks after referral

Treatment
  • Each child is allocated a speech and language
    therapy intervention package (SALTIP)
  • Either seen individually or within groups
  • Blocks of therapy, of approximately 10 weeks
  • Followed by a period of consolidation

School Service
  • Joint working with school staff
  • Assessment of speech, language communication
    skills
  • Joint planning and target setting
  • Training of school staff
  • Each child is allocated a SALTIP

Pre School Special Needs Service
  • Multidisciplinary working with paediatricians,
    physiotherapy, occupational therapy, playgroup
    staff etc.
  • Working with a range of children with complex
    needs, e.g. eating and drinking difficulties,
    autistic spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy etc

Flying Start in Bridgend area
  • Preventative service
  • Working in 3 distinct geographical areas
  • Training child care providers
  • OCN accredited course

Sure Start, N/Pt area
  • Preventative service
  • Running baby and toddler groups
  • County wide service
  • Advisory service to child care providers

  • Telephone advice line
