Solar Storm Simulations with theSpace Weather
Modeling Framework
  • Project Goals
  • Faster than real-time simulation of the entire
    Sun-Earth system following large geo-effective
    solar storms
  • Objectives of Project Columbia Usage
  • Simulate the most geo-effective event of the
Halloween solar storms of October-November 2003
  • Significant Results
  • Science impacts
  • The reconnection rate in the magnetosphere
strongly controls the temperature and density in
    the lobes and plasma sheet.
  • Code Performance (speedups)

Impact Due to Project Columbia Matched
simultaneous observations of six satellites
located at very different regions of the
magnetosphere - a qualitative leap in
magnetospheric physics.

Applying Aerosol Optical Depth for AirNow and
Air Quality Forecasting
  • MODIS Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) supports
EPA/NOAA air quality forecasting EPA aerosol
    transport rule making
  • Sept. 2003 - successful prototype of technique to
deliver AOD forecasts to forecasting community.
  • EPA supporting transition to operations (FY04
    170K) and follow-on products
  • Support from EPA ground sites for NASA INTEX
    field campaign

Flooding in New Orleans
  • The false-color Landsat 7 image below shows an
80 flooded downtown New Orleans on Sept. 7,
shortly after officials began pumping water back
    into Lake Pontchartrain.

The image above shows New Orleans on Sept. 15,
after much of the floodwater had been pumped out.
Officials estimated 380 cubic meters of water
per second were pumped back into the lake.
