First Source

• Pantera Vulgar display of power (1992)
• Hollow by Pantera is a ballad that gives
  insight to the horror of lifelessness. A mans
  best friend is in a unconscious state and lays
  there with blank expressions. He cant believe
  what has happened and remembers how much love
  that they had for each other. As he sees his
  helpless friend sitting there with no emotion, he
  grieves about wanting him back. He explains that
  that his friend looks like he has no soul and is
  just a shell of a man. Mad at God, he believes
  that he can only be like his powerless friend and
  express no love anymore.

• Metallica And Justice for All (1988)
• This dark emotional ballad is from the first
  person perspective of a man that has just woken
  up and cannot do anything but have thoughts. As
  he becomes more aware of his surroundings, he
  begins to realize that he has no limbs, voice,
  hearing, and soul. The darkness that surrounds
  his mind horrifies him. He wants to know why they
  are keeping him alive and desires to be cut off
  of the machines that prevent him from dying. He
  does not want to exist like this and prays that
  God takes his life away so he can be free from
  agony.

• The idea behind the ballads of Pantera and
  Metallica, as presented in their lyrics and
  music, focuses on the helplessness of a person in
  an incapacitated state and losing the will the
  live with melodic rhythms and bone crushing
  riffs.

Conclusion

• Experiencing a loss for the worst is the point
  for both Panteras Hollow and Metallicas One.
  This feeling is created by the expressive lyrics
  and the powerful music they begin very peaceful
  and towards the end pick up and make a rage full
  ending. This transforms both songs into a well
  executed dark melodic ballad about losing the
  will to live.
