GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
  • State Department of Education and Florence City
    Schools require twenty-four Carnegie Units to
    graduate.
  • Students must pass the Alabama High School
    Graduation Exam Reading, Language, Biology,
    Math, Social Studies.

High School Diploma
  • 4 credits in English
  • 4 credits in math
  • 4 credits in science
  • 4 credits in social studies
  • 1 credit in physical education
  • A waiver for the credit in Physical Education
    may only be given for Band, JROTC, or Athletics.

High School Diploma-Continued
  • 1/2 credit (one semester) in Health
  • 1/2 credit (one semester) in Fine Arts
  • 2 credits in foreign language
  • (Advanced Diploma only)
  • Must be two units in the same foreign
    language.

High School Diploma-Continued
  • 1/2 credit (one semester) Business Education
  • 4 or 6 Electives (depending on diploma type)

Notes
  • Students must pass all parts of the AHSGE for a
    high school diploma. AHSGE is due to be phased
    out by 2015.
  • Students may not earn more than 10 credits in a
    12-month period.
  • Students must complete a diploma designation
    form. If a student elects to change diploma
    type, a diploma change form must be completed.

Planning Consideration
  • Students should think about their goals,
    interests, motivation, and abilities.
  • Students should take classes based on college
    planning and career path.

Tracking Grades
  • Progress Reports are issued at the mid-point of
    each grading period (four and ½ weeks.
  • Report Cards are issued at the end of each
    grading period (nine weeks).
  • Check FHS website for dates of reports

  • Use STI-Home to track attendance, grades,
    discipline, via the Internetcall main office for
    student/parent PIN and website
  • Keep in touch with teachers via email and
    conferencesemail addresses for all teachers are
    on the FHS website, and conferences may be set up
    through the guidance office

Promotion Information
  • Students must pass at least 3 of 4 CORE (English,
    math, science, social studies) courses to be
    promoted to the 10th grade.
  • Students must earn at least 10 credits to be
    promoted to the 11th grade.
  • Students must earn 17 credits to be promoted to
    the 12th grade.

  • One of your handouts gives you the dates of
    upcoming AHSGE dates for the 2009-10 school year.
  • On the flip side is a chart showing when
    students are eligible to take portions of the
    exam. This is dictated to us by the State
    Department of Education.

    AHSGE
  • Reading 563
  • Language 560
  • Science 491
  • Math 477
  • Social Studies 509

PSAT
  • The PSAT (preliminary SAT) will be given to FHS
    juniors on October 14, 2009.
  • National Merit Scholars are chosen from results
    of this test.
  • Register in guidance office-- 13.00 fee.
  • DeadlineSeptember 23
  • Mrs. Linton is conducting PSAT prep. See
    attached handout.

What if I Want to Participate in Collegiate
Athletics?
  • There are certain core courses that students must
    take, i.e., Algebra I (for Division I or II
    colleges), to be eligible to participate in
    college sports.
  • Students must maintain a certain GPA and ACT or
    SAT score to be eligible to participate in
    college sports.
  • Register with the NCAA Clearinghouse for the
    latest information www.ncaaclearinghouse.org

Athletic EligibilityMeans Academics FIRST
  • Grade Requirements Students must pass at least
    6 new courses (4 must be core subjects) with at
    least a 70 average each year.
  • Residency Requirements
  • Check out www.fcs.k12.al.us/Athletics for the
    latest sports info.
