Title: Data Format in GOM 3

1
Data Format in GOM 3
  • Data Organization and Geodatabases

Tony Dupont Earth Science Associates Long Beach,
CA
2
GOM 3 Data
  • Primarily MMS Data (ASCII flat files)
  • Discoveries and Prospects

3
Data Organization
  • Currently, ESRI Shapefiles and dBASE files make
    up the bulk of data
  • Consolidation of folders continues
  • One entire reload

4
Data Organization - Detail
  • DataSets contains shapefiles for ArcGIS
  • DBFs contains all tabular data used in ArcGIS,
    including dialogs
  • DRA contains data for the Direct Report Access
    program
  • Help contains all files related to online help

5
Geodatabases in GOM 3
6
What is a Geodatabase?
  • (Modern) data storage and management framework
    for ArcGIS
  • Database to store all data types used by ArcGIS
  • Geographic Features
  • Tabular Data
  • Raster Data

7
Type of Geodatabases
  • Enterprise Oracle, SQL Server, DB2
  • SDE (ESRIs Spatial Data Engine)
  • Personal Microsoft Access (before 9.2)
  • Univ. of Texas GBDS data format
  • File Geodatabase
  • 1 Terabyte per table, feature class

8
Why use a Geodatabase?
  • Stored Relationships
  • Identifying Owners with ID tool
  • Topology
  • Annotation

9
Geodatabases and GOM 3
  • Legacy
  • 12 years since GOM 1.95
  • Shapefiles and dBASE files for ArcView 3x
  • ArcView 3x and ArcGIS 8x supported simultaneously
  • Currently - Geodatabase used to correct topology
between MMS ArcInfo-created blocks and leases

10
SDE and GOM 3
  • It is supported
  • Full support depends on version
  • Setup is easy
  • Extra maintenance each month
  • 3 basic files for using SDE with GOM3

11
SDE and GOM 3
  • It is supported
  • Full support depends on version
  • Setup is easy
  • Extra maintenance each month
  • 3 basic files for using SDE with GOM3
  • sdePara.txt, SdeConversion.exe,
    SDELayerSource.exe

12
SDE and GOM 3
sdePara.txt
  • Text file to define use of SDE
  • 6 lines
  • Shape vs SDE indicator
  • Server Computer (Host Name)
  • Service Name
  • SDE User Name
  • SDE User Password
  • Version (such as SDE.DEFAULT)

13
SDE and GOM 3
SDEConversion.exe
  • Loads shapefiles into SDE instance
  • Based on sdeSelection.txt file (included each
    month)

14
SDE and GOM 3
SDELayerSource.exe
  • Changes the data source for layer files (.lyr)
from shapefiles to SDE feature classes
  • Only executed when new data or layers are added

15
SDE Issues for GOM 3
  • DataSets (Feature Classes) are too small to
    significantly improve performance
  • File-based data will never go away
  • Multiple version support (9.1 vs 9.2) will be
    extremely difficult
  • No appending/updating

16
File Geodatabase
  • Takes advantage of the geodatabase format for all
clients without extra maintenance by IT
  • Vector data can be compressed
  • Versioning not supported, but unneeded
  • Will not be used until all clients at ArcGIS 9.2

17
Geodatabase Plans
  • Will be guided by our clients
  • What have we missed?
