2About the course
This course will provide students with the
opportunity to study a diverse range of practical
skills required for the engineering industry.
Students will be able to progress to other
appropriate, post 16 engineering courses either
in sixth form, at college or in employment.
Your child will either complete the Certificate
or Diploma depending upon their ability the
Certificate is equivalent to 2 GCSEs at grades C
to A and the Diploma is equivalent to 4 GCSEs at
the same grades
3Course Content
The Certificate is made up of four units of work,
the Diploma is made up of 7. Each unit will last
approximately 2 terms (some units run
concurrently)
1) Working Practices in Engineering
2) Using Engineering Information
3) Electronic Circuit Construction and Testing
4) Computer Aided Design
5) Mathematics for Engineering Technicians
6) Electrical Maintenance Fundamentals
7) Applied Science for Engineering Technicians
4WORKING PRACTICES
We shall produce a number of products using a
range of engineering processes such as -
Filing
Drilling
Riveting
Welding
Turning
Soldering
Gluing
Vacuum Forming
5ENGINEERING INFORMATION
We shall use and interpret information in a
number of forms
ORTHOGRAPHIC DRAWING
EXPLODED DRAWING
ISOMETRIC SKETCHING
6ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT CONSTRUCTION AND TESTING
Whilst not going into the depth of GCSE
Electronics, we shall build and test a number of
electronic circuits and manufacture printed
circuit boards to our own design.
7COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN
We will use the schools many computer design
packages to produce professional 3D products
which will be downloaded and manufactured on our
CNC Router.
In addition we shall visit Gatesheads City
Learning Centre near the Metro centre where there
are more extensive computer design and
manufacture facilities

11Methods of Assessment
The course will be assessed by means of a
portfolio of evidence with photographs and
reports on the work you have done. You will be
awarded either a pass, merit or distinction each
equivalent to 2 or 4 GCSE grades C,B or A
