- 5. Funding Reform (NPFS, Webb, Leitch)
151. Local Entitlement Curriculum Issues
- Matching the curriculum to pupil ability /
potential and employment opportunities (RSNP) -
- Stretching learners, an ESTYN inspection
priority -
- National Qualification Framework GCSE
equivalence points -
- Increasing pupil choice v practical timetable
constraints and transport logistics -
- High Successful Completion rates Completion
rate x attainment rate -
- Understanding Pupils needs (e.g. preferred
learning styles) -
- All pupils were very interested in learning but
the qualification was carefully chosen to suit
student ability - Barry College staff survey 2007
162. Statutory Duty to Collaborate
- Issues for the College and Schools in the Vale
and Cardiff - Joint Planning / timetabling
- Sharing common goals / values
- Sensitivity to the cultural differences of each
institution - Communication our different expectations
- Standardisation and agreement (SLA or Contract)
-
- School and college must have the same agenda
and ethos. This must not be a solution for
problem or uninterested learners College staff
survey 2007 - Communication between everyone involved on this
important scheme must improve College staff
survey 2007
173. Quality Assurance Issues

-
184. Listening to Learners (Pupils Feedback)
- Will College courses improve pupils career
opportunities?
19Pupils Feedback continued
- At age 16 what do you want to do?
20Pupils Feedback continued
- The impact of College on pupils opinions of
education
21Listening to Staff (College Teachers Feedback)
- We have, I hope, made progress but I was
certainly challenged after 30 years of teaching -
- Effective selection of appropriate pupils that
are well motivated by their courses is key - The calibre of students was just right and they
fitted into college life easily - uninterested learnersbring so many issues with
them and defeat the ethos of Learning Pathways - College Staff Survey 2007 08
- Accurate selection of learners is the key
22College Teachers Staff Development Needs
- Managing pupil behaviour appropriately
- Learning new classroom management skills and
strategies - Learning different motivational skills
- Coping with pupils learning difficulties
appropriately - Managing cultural differences between schools and
college (e.g. handling discipline) - Supervision, monitoring and control out of class
- Support from schools good communication and
regular contact creates joined up experiences
23Perceptions
- Teachers Perceptions
- Many pupils are making good progress
- Some pupils are not well suited to their course
- Many learners are progressing well with practical
work - Many learners need more support with theory
- Some learners did not work well independently
- Perception of Heads of Department
- Deploying staff that are committed to learners
aged 14 -16
