Part 3- The results
  • How The sustainability approach
  • What positive and negative factors promoting the
    righttransition

16
The sustainability approach
  • Look at the case studies to see what they teach
us from three points of view
  • The ecological point of view is it ecologically
    worthwhile?
  • The social point of view is it socially
    desirable?
  • The economic point of view is it economically
    feasible?

17
Results
  • FACTORS STIMULATING TRANSITION
  • A situation needing improvement
  • A common vision
  • A good plan
  • Leadership
  • Public/ political support
  • Finances (Interreg, Province, Government, private
    money)

18
More results
  • FACTORS THAT SLOW DOWN TRANSITION
  • Transition takes time!
  • Fear of change (institutions, farmers)
  • Policies dont use the concept of transition
  • Most schemes dont include support to transition
  • Support is too often ex-post
  • Physical planning is often one-dimensional
  • Lack of supportive data on costs and benefits of
    improving nature

19
Part 5- The future
  • More general lessons learned
  • Investments needed
  • New possibilities

20
Lessons learned
  • Each partner has his own way of working and of
    presenting the material
  • Need to use a common framework for data
    collection and analysis
  • An outsider helps make things comparable

21
More lessons
  • Trust all your partners
  • Be flexible and creative, use all data that is
    available pictures, maps
  • Some partners are more in a hurry that others
  • Be co-operative, partners dont have the same
culture, dont speak the same language

22
Added value of co-operation
  • You learn about yourself by having to explain to
    others
  • You get inspired by how others obtain results
  • You avoid mistakes made by others
  • You (hopefully) learn from other cultures

23
New possibilities
  • Invest in the right things
  • Look and listen
  • Involve stakeholders
  • Support movers and shakers
  • Lobby regional, national, European level
  • Use the new EU fund

24
SOwe saw
  • Common features of the regions
  • The 3 case studies
  • The results
  • The future, build on lessons learned!
