    daily local newspaper)
  • Computers with internet access
  • Selected articles from e-paper
  • Whiteboard
  • Word wall
  • Online dictionary

  • Students will be able to skim, scan, and
    summarize newspaper articles.
  • Students will be able to develop reading skills.

    through discussion.

    enrich their vocabulary.

Procedure (Warm Up)
  • Write objectives on the board and go over orally.
  • Discuss techniques of how to read the newspaper.
  • Introduce skimming and scanning, define them
    and use todays local paper for demonstration.

Procedure.(Presentation)
  • Introduce and show the web site
    http//www.onlinenewspapers.com/index.htm.
  • Guide the students to get to The New York
    Times, ask them to locate different topic areas
    such as front page, weather, classifieds, etc.
  • In pairs, ask them to go back to the news page
    and select an article to summarize.
  • Have them report their summaries as a whole class.

Procedure(Practice)
  • In pairs, give them an e-paper article with the
    first sentence in each paragraph deleted. Have
    them put the sentences in the correct places in
    the article.
  • Give them scrambled paragraphs from a different
    article and have them re-order it.
  • Give them another article with certain bolded
    vocabulary words and ask them to guess the
    meaning from the context.

Assessment(Follow Up Activity)
  • Have them look up an article from an e-paper to
    practice skimming and scanning. Then, summarize
    the article in their own words. Ask them to print
    out the article and turn it in with their
    summaries.

Closing
  • Problems
  • Students may not agree with each other when
    selecting articles that interest them.
  • They may feel nervous due to lack of experience
    in navigating through the web.
  • Some students might not have access to internet
    outside of the classroom.

Evaluation
  • Collect their summaries in the next class and
    evaluate them.
  • Teachers observation. Create an observation
    chart to record students progress.
