Most programs include visual and auditory aspects
and are interactive, allowing users to start at a
beginners level and work their way to higher

Language Guide
Learning the thousands of words needed to be
comfortable in a language is a great challenge.
The vocabulary guides are in essence virtual
worlds. Users visit different parts of this world
(i.e. insects, the family, the farm). They can
then place their cursor over any of the images
and hear their names pronounced and see them
spelled out. In some pages, a notepad is
displayed next to the title. Placing the cursor
over this notepad will reveal a list of
supplementary vocabulary .
Interactive Readings The interactive readings hel
p users develop comprehension skills by allowing
him or her hear the reading of a text, maneuver
within the sound track and rehear difficult
phrases, as well as see the text of what is being
read. In addition, the readings allow students to
build vocabulary and develop reading skills.
Right now only readings for learning French are
available. For an example of a reading see Chère
Maman, cher Papa (dear mother, dear father).

Learning Vocabulary by Computer Games
22
  • 'Language learning is hard work ... Effort is
required at every moment and must be maintained
over a long period of time. Games help and
    encourage many learners to
  • sustain their interest and work.'
  • 'Games for Language Learning'
  • by Andrew Wright, David Betteridge and Michael
    BuckbyCambridge University Press, 1984.

23
  • Well-chosen games are invaluable as they
  • give students a break
  • Games are highly motivating
  • they are amusing and challenging.
  • they employ meaningful and useful language in
    real contexts
  • They also encourage and increase cooperation
  • 'Six Games for the EFL/ESL Classroom'
  • by Aydan Ersoz
  • The Internet TESL Journal, Vol. VI, No. 6, June
    2000.

24
  • 'Games have been shown to have advantages and
effectiveness in learning vocabulary in various
    ways.
  • Games bring in relaxation and fun for students,
thus help them learn and retain new words more
    easily.
  • Games usually involve friendly competition and
they keep learners interested. These create the
motivation for learners of English to get
involved and participate actively in the learning
    activities.
  • Vocabulary games bring real world context into
the classroom, and enhance students' use of
English in a flexible, communicative way.'
  • 'Learning Vocabulary Through Games'

  • cultural context,
  • timing,
  • learning topic,
  • the classroom settings

MULTIMEDIA DEVICESFOR LEARNING VOCABULARY
31
Mp3 Players
  • More commonly referred to as an MP3 player, a
digital audio player or "DAP" is a portable,
handheld digital music player that stores,
organizes and plays MP3 and often other audio
files. Most DAPs are powered by rechargeable
batteries, some of which are not user
replaceable. Listening to music stored on DAPs is
typically done through earphones, but external
speakers and docking stations are also
    available.
  • Digital audio players are generally categorized
    by storage media

32
  • We can use our mp3 players to enrich our foreign
language knowledge. For example a web site which
    is http//www.loquella.com/learnspanishmp3.html
  • provides the users audio lessons for Spanish and
French which are in mp3 format. Users can
download and listen where ever they are and when
    ever it is.

33
Mp4 Players
  • MP4/MTV Player is used to describe a group of
digital audio players or portable Media Players,
most commonly manufactured in China. These
players are capable of displaying images, videos,
and text files. Although commonly called MP4
players, they have little to do with the
MP4/M4A/M4V audio and video files. The earlier
players were usually unable to play MPEG4 format
videos and were limited to proprietary file
formats such as MTV, DMV, MPV and AMV. This is
beginning to change however, as more of these
players manufactured in recent years have begun
supporting MPEG4 format video files. Some of them
    are a variety of S1 MP3 Player

34
Mp4 Players
  • MP4/MTV Players can be used for learning foreign
language vocabularies with different ways. We can
not only watch or listen some lessons but also
use it like a memory card viewer. Memory cards
are small cards that is written both two sides.
On one side vocabulary is written in foreign
language, in the other side it is written in
users native language. It is easy to use this
technique on Mp4 players without carrying a lot
of papers. You can download them from internet
or prepare on your PC and save them on you Mp4 to
    use.

DVD Players
  • A DVD player is a device that plays discs
produced under both the DVD Video and DVD Audio
    technical standards, two different and
    incompatible standards.
  • Most hardware DVD players have to be connected to
a television set there are also some small
portable devices which have an LCD screen
    attached.
  • A DVD player has to complete these tasks
  • Read a DVD disc in ISO UDF version 1.2 format
  • Optionally decrypt the data with either CSS
    and/or Macrovision
  • Read and obey the DVD's Regional lockout codes
and display a warning if the player is not
    authorised to play the DVD
  • Decode the MPEG-2 video stream with a maximum of
    10 Mbit/s (peak) or 8 Mbit/s (continuous)
  • Decode sound in MP2, PCM or AC-3 format and
output (with optional AC-3 to stereo
downsampling) on stereo connector, optical or
    electric digital connector
  • Output a video signal, either an analog one (in
NTSC, PAL or SECAM format) on the composite,
S-Video, SCART, or component video connectors, or
a digital one on the DVI or HDMI connectors

36
DVD Players
  • A DVD player can make you have opportunity to
enrich your vocabulary. Knowing vocabulary is not
enough to say that you can use it. It is
necessary to know how to use vocabulary in a
sentence or situation. There are a lot of DVDs
that give you opportunity to learn by watching
examples on television. It is also good to learn
    by watching and listening.

37
VCR Players
  • The videocassette recorder (or VCR, more commonly
known in the UK and Ireland as the video
recorder), is a type of video tape recorder that
    uses removable videotape cassettes containing
magnetic tape to record audio and video from a
television broadcast so it can be played back
later. Most VCRs have their own tuner (for direct
TV reception) and a programmable timer (for
unattended recording of a certain channel at a
    particular time).

38
VCR Players
  • The videocassette recorder is good for us to
watch movies in our house which are in foreign
language. When we watch and see in the same time,
it is easy to memorize the information. This
    makes us remember vocabularies easily.
